On a white bench you can see forever

This bench stood out. All the other benches in the area are painted a dark redish/brown. But for some reason, this bench is white. Taken at Port Elliot in blustery winds and between rain showers, this bench overlooks the Bluff (Rosetta Head) which can be seen in the distance. It is a fantastic place to do some contemplation. But as Australia is heading into our colder months, maybe take your thermals. Happy Bench Monday.

Good Reception, No Connection

In Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens, two young men share a park bench in companionable silence—each absorbed in his own digital world. Surrounded by lush greenery and a bustling park scene, they sit side by side yet remain worlds apart. In an age of constant connectivity, the strongest connection in this scene is the Wi-Fi.

HBM! I usually walk along the waterfront but decided to change my route a bit. This bench is in front of an ice cream store.

This gentleman was reading "On Tyranny", a book by Timothy Snyder (highly recommend!), while waiting for his wife. She's a volunteer at Denver Botanic Gardens. Steve enjoyed a long conversation with him while I took pics.

Monday Blues and Bench

A new, double exposure of a tree and bench that I have shown several times before. It is not an illusion that the river has b=flooded its bank and that the bench is in the water at the moment. The colour is how this double exposure happened to come out of the camera.

HBM: Beach front sculpture, “Finitor Polaris”

The Municipality of Silves inaugurated the sculpture “Finitor Polaris” designed by the artist Karine Pierre Vikre, in Jardim do Antigo Minigolfe, on Avenida Beira-Mar in Armação de Pêra, on 2 September at 5pm, 2021.

It is a sculpture that aims to create a combination of a nautical instrument (quadrant) and a musical instrument (harp), thus forming a sound quadrant. [This word, quadrant, is used for a traditional instrument, used to make calculations of altitude and traditionally employed by sailors to navigate, which has a piece shaped like a quarter of a circle].

Its name comes from Latin, with Finitor being the horizon and Polaris the polar star. The sculptural piece represents a quadrant, a nautical navigation instrument, 3.15m high by 3.16m long, made of iron, with hollow square tubes, an iron plate and 10 galvanized steel cables. The Portugal News

Skiddaw house

The highest hostel in Britain. Note the s in the word hostel. There are no luxuries to be found here apart from a hot shower (apparently).

From the website:
"Accessible only on foot or by mountain bike, Britain’s highest hostel is perfect for fell-walkers, adventurous families and lovers of wild and remote places. Skiddaw House is situated at 470m/1550ft on the flanks of Skiddaw and is 3.5 miles from the nearest road. This traditional independent hostel, which is affiliated to the YHA, sits on the Cumbria Way and offers simple, yet comfortable accommodation.

Stay here for a real escape from it all - with no mains electricity, phone signal, TV or internet to detract from the wilderness. Solar panels provide the energy for the lights and plenty of hot water for the showers; heating is provided by wood-burning stoves."
