Day 073 of 365 03-14-2023 Waterfront Park, Seattle

A more abstract and close-up night view of the Seattle Waterfront Fountain on Pier 58.

If you have walked or driven past Pier 58 along the waterfront in Seattle (between the Seattle Great Wheel and the Aquarium) prior to September 2020 then you most likely saw the Seattle Waterfront Park fountain on Pier 58. Pier 58 had been in need of repairs for a long time and it was closed in August 2020 after an inspection found several inches between the pier and the land.

Pier 58 was approved to be replaced, however during early work on the Pier the central portion of the Pier and the waterfront (bronze) fountain collapsed into Elliott Bay. 2 workers also fell into the bay but were rescued with minor injuries. Pier 57 was also closed (with the great wheel along with stores and restaurants) after an inspection found the southern part of Pier 58 could collapse putting Pier 57 in danger of collapsing. Pier 57 was closed 5 days after Pier 58 closed.

Construction and removal of the Pier continue and it is expected to open sometime in 2024. No word if the fountain will be replaced which is a shame, it was a very cool-looking fountain.

The Waterfront Fountain was an outdoor fountain and sculpture by James FitzGerald and Margaret Tomkins, installed along Alaskan Way in Seattle, Washington. FitzGerald sadly passed away prior to finishing the fountain. The fountain was completed alongside the park in October 1974.

Robertson Hall at Princeton University

Robertson Hall is the home of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton's renowned program for careers in public service. The building includes classrooms, offices, a lecture hall, and a small cafe, and hosts many lectures open to the public. With its series of 58 tapered columns, Robertson Hall is one of Princeton's finest examples of Modernist architecture. Minoru Yamasaki, also architect of the University's Peyton Hall and the former World Trade Center in New York City, designed Robertson Hall.

Each towering 10 feet and overlooking the Fountain of Freedom pool outside Robertson Hall, 12 bronze monumental sculptures, each representing a sign of the Chinese zodiac, are now on public display until December 4, 2016. The sculptures are the work of renowned contemporary Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei.

Scudder Plaza and The Fountain of Freedom at Princeton University

Scudder Plaza may be the most relaxing spot on campus: you can catch the cooling spray from James FitzGerald’s monumental sculpture, Fountain of Freedom, or be soothed by the sounds of its cascading water. At twenty-three feet high, Fountain of Freedom is one of the largest cast bronze sculptures in the U.S. Inspired by the rugged beauty of the artist’s native Pacific Northwest, the grooves, channels, and spires of the six-ton sculpture—reminiscent of naturally eroded forms—are meant to symbolize Woodrow Wilson’s aspirations and frustrations.

His statue is on Rolleston Avenue, just outside the Botanical Gardens and currently at the southern end of the line of floral tributes for the 15/03/19 terrorist attack.
