Deep in the heart of the Styx Valley in southern Tasmania.
The area has been extensively logged but a tiny remnant of the original forest exists as a reserve for big trees.
It is easily accessible to Hobart - only slightly over an hour's drive to be surrounded by a forest so much older than you. If you visit Mount Field National Park then it behooves you to do the extra 30mins up the road into the Styx Reserve. After a visit it's not hard to see why the logging of these forests has been a source of unrest for many years.
Took an identical frame with the Z6 on the day, not sure which one I like the best!

Styx Big Tree Reserve Forest Walk, Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area, Maydena, Tasmania
Family : Ganodermataceae
We drove to the Styx Big Tree Reserve later in the afternoon after visiting Lake Pedder and the Gordon River Dam. After nearing Maydena we turned off the main road onto a gravel road, quite rough in places and probably not the kind of road we would normally have taken had we been in hire car. Fortunately, on this trip we had brought our Toyota Landcruiser across Bass Straight and having done so it allowed us to explore a lot of places in Tasmania that on previous visits had been off limits.
We were a little disappointed when we arrived at the Big Tree Reserve as the forest was not entirely what we expected. While there were young Eucalyptus regnans trees emerging, many of the trees in the reserve were aging (senescent).
So much logging has gone on in Tasmania and that logging activity has come right to the boundaries of most of the reserved forests. This has exposed the reserves to increased bushfire threats and hot and cold winds that these trees and their mixed rainforest understorey could do better without.
Tasmania has managed its natural environment poorly and Tasmanian Governments of all persuasions have not grasped the significance of maintaining the states natural assets as major drawcards for tourism.
The Styx Big Tree Reserve forest walk is fairly short but nevertheless well worth doing. The boardwalk ensures the walk is easy and it takes one to the base of several of the big Eucalyptus regnans trees. The understorey is of rainforest species such as Acacia melanoxylon, Nothofagus cunninghamii, tree ferns like Dicksonia antarctica, Cyathea australis and numerous other rainforest species.
The mossy logs are lush green and give the place the feel of being in a fairyland, similar to other places in Tasmania like the Blue Tier on the East Coast, and the Tarkine, on the West Coast. Depending on how much rain has fallen ferns, fungi, lichens and liverworts are also common.
Footnote - after taking a long break from posting Tasmania trip 2022 images I've now returned to the task of posting images from the final days of that trip.
