Menindee lakes void of water

Menindee lakes void of most of its water in 2019. A series of natural lakes that filled during floods. The Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) ordered the Menindee Lakes be drained in 2014 and 2017.... 16 years of water in four years for water demands downstream, the equivalent of 4 Sydney Harbours at the anger of locals

Dreaded contentious pipeline at Menindee

The dreaded contentious water pipeline at Menindee. Australia. The lakes that form the Menindee Lake system when full hold three times the water of Sydney Harbour, however the lakes are now virtually empty and crosses erected everywhere remind visitors of its demise, mismanagement and water theft

Menindee Lakes

I visited this area in October 2009, the lake was just about dry with many dead tree trunks.

The control of the water flow by weirs, regulators, levees and channels to provide Broken Hill with a reliable water supply and for irrigation to NSW, Victoria and South Australia has caused controversy as this control affects and disturbs the ecosystem.
The change to the natural flood and flow pattern, i.e. storage of water in winter and spring with release in summer and autumn for irrigation reduced the vigorous growth of River Red Gums. This in turn leads to poor tree health and tree growth, and also changes the types of plants that grow on the forest floor.

Day 196: Flat

Thursday 19/02/2009

A workmate and I went on a site visit to far north Victoria/far west New South Wales (it was right on the river that divides the two). I'm from Kansas, and this is still the flattest land I've ever seen.
