A Reminder of the Indian Summer That Was

Well, it is winter here in Melbourne now, an in spite of being sunny today, there is no warmth in it, so I have decided to post a photograph from a few months ago to remind me of the Indian summer that was, when taking a walk didn't require multiple layers as well as sunglasses.

On a walk back in March I went past a garden of a small Art Deco bungalow which has a selection of old fashioned fragrant roses in its garden! I don't know what variety this is, but its stylish structure of apricot petals, albeit slight sunburn around the edges, is so architectural and beautiful. Like its pink neighbours in the garden bed, it had a light whiff of a sweet scent to it.

Well, it is summer here in Melbourne, although up until recently a very mild one, which has made for a selection of wonderful rose blooms. With the weather being so fine, I decided to take a stroll in the summer sun the other day

The bloom had a light whiff of a sweet scent too.

The Red Amongst the Greens

Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees full of colour like this Japanese Maple. When I took this photo, it was still mid autumn, so there were only some reds amongst the greens, which made they especially noticeable and attractive.

The day I took this photo was a lovely and sunny day with bright blue skies, one of many we had here in early and mid autumn. Now it is winter here, and very grey and overcast, so I felt a burst of colour was in order for today.

A Lorraine Lee Basking in the Sun

Melbourne has experienced a wonderful Indian summer this year, and as a result, not only are the Autumnal colours starting to appear, but there are still plenty of beautiful blooms.

This "Lorraine Lee" rose caught my eye as it basked in the bright early afternoon sunshine.

"Lorraine Lee" was bred by a famous Australian Rose Breeder, Alister Clark in 1924. It is named after Lorraine Lee, who was born in Melbourne in 1890, and was a cousin of Jessie Clark, Alister’s niece. During the Great War, Lorraine worked in the Women’s Land Army in England and the Ministry of Munitions, earning an MBE for her dedication. In 1920, on a visit to Australia, Alister showed her his unnamed rose seedlings and asked her to choose one. The rose she chose became Alister Clark’s most famous and popular rose "Lorraine Lee".
