Tuesday, 13 February 2024: our temperature just before 5:00 pm is -5°C (FEELS LIKE -14°C). Sunrise was at 7:53 am and sunset will be at 5:47 p m. A mix of sun and clouds today. So glad it wasn't snowing today, as my TV died this morning and I had to go out and buy a new one. Won't be delivered till 21 February!

Yet again, I am diving into my archives, as I have not been getting a chance to get out for a drive. If I wrote a description under any previously-posted photos that were taken on the same days as these 'new' photos posted this evening, I will add it under today's uploads.

"When I was in Safeway on 16 April 2009, I was staring longingly at the large bunches of brightly coloured Gerberas, but they were all far too expensive! A staff member asked if she could help me at all, and I asked her if they ever split a bunch in two. She said they didn't, but added that she had some smaller, much cheaper bunches in the back and she brought these out to show me. There was just the one bunch of thesecream with pink ones. They are amazingly beautiful (and different, to me) and of course I just can't do justice to them."

This evening, I am adding five photos from my archives. If I wrote a description under a previously posted photo taken on the same day, I will add it under today's uploads.

Seen on 12 September 2009 at the Bragg Creek Natural Area, west of Calgary, when a group of us were on a botanizing outing.

Inside a Tulip

Happy November!

Here are five more photos from my archives, as I still haven't been anywhere since 19 October. Our weather has been nasty, with a few inches of snow about a week ago, and lots of overcast weather. Too cold for the snow to melt (including off my car!), so I have been hibernating for quite a few days. Just a brief, light snowfall in the afternoon of 28 October 2023, too. The last two or three days have been sunny, including today, 1 November 2023. Unfortunately, my car has been gatting the winter tires put on plus a couple of other things.

If I wrote a description under any previously-posted photos that were taken on the same outings as these 'new' photos posted today, I will add it under today's photos.

"I was trying to take a macro looking down into this pink tulip, when the two front petals suddenly fell off : ) It reminded me of a photo I uploaded a long time ago, with some of the petals deliberately removed."

Another five photos from my archives. I am adding the description that I wrote on a previously posted photo taken on the same outing. I had really hoped that I would be able to finally go for a drive out of the city today. However, the maintenance light came on for an oil change yesterday, after I had been for physio, and I have to wait a week for the earliest appointment. So, no new photos.

Photographed in Bragg Creek Natural Area on 10 September.2009.

Another five photos from my archives. I am adding the description that I wrote on a previously posted photo taken on the same outing.

"This photo was taken on 25 July 2009, on a hike along the Pocaterra Cirque trail, Kananaskis. Within a few minutes, the weather changed, the sun vanished from the valley and it poured with rain just after I took this photo. A beautiful place for a hike!"

Another five photos from my archives. More free space still needed on my computer, so lots of checking and deleting old images. If I wrote a description under other photos taken on the same outing/drive, I will add it to these five shots. Posting at the unearthly hour (for me!) of 5:00 am, after being unable to get any sleep at all.

Siberian Iris growing wild in Fish Creek Park

Back to grabbing a few more photos from my archives. If I wrote a description under a previously posted image taken on the same trip/outing, I will add it under today's photos.

"Yesterday evening, 8 July 2009, a handful of us were taken to see this and several other blooms on a clump of plants growing wild in Fish Creek Park. The couple who generously led the way are keen to find out the ID of this species. They had been told that it might be an endangered species - or perhaps it is simply a garden escapee. They were definitely a "sight for sore eyes" : ) Any help with ID would be extremely welcome! The scientific name would also be much appreciated, as naturalists and botanists are involved with this, too : ) Later: thanks, Doug, for the confirmed ID of Siberian Iris!"

Back to grabbing a few more photos from my archives. If I wrote a description under a previously posted image taken on the same trip/outing, I will add it under today's photos.

"Normally looking sleek, this White-breasted Nuthatch was all puffed up, thanks to the -25C to -28C (-13F to -18F) weather today! Feeling rather like a female version of the Michelin Man myself, thanks to my thick fleece jacket plus a very bulky winter jacket, I can totally relate."

A teeny Bicknell's Geranium / Geranium bicknellii flower

"This macro shot of a teeny Bicknell's Geranium was taken at the Mountainview Sports and Handicapped Centre that we botanized on 2 July 2009."

"Geranium bicknellii is a species of geranium known by the common names Bicknell's cranesbill and northern cranesbill (or Bicknell's Geranium). It is native to much of the northern half of North America, where it can be found in a number of forest and woodland habitats.

Geranium bicknellii is a fire-adapted species, occurring most abundantly in recently burned forests. The seeds remain dormant while buried in the forest floor, sometimes for centuries, until a fire removes the organic litter and exposes the seeds to sunlight. The geraniums will germinate, bloom, and set seed profusely for several years after the fire, until other plants grow large enough to shade them out. The new seeds will then lie dormant in the soil, waiting for the next fire." From Wikipedia.

Because I have no more new photos to post, I have grabbed five old photos from my archives. I will add the description that I may have added to a previously posted photo taken on the same day.

Hepatica for colour

Three more photos from my drive NE of the city on 29 November 2022. The two flower photos are from my archives and added for colour.

Back to posting a few photos. Had a few errands to run the last few days, and I had also been working on a 2023 calendar. Like two previous calendars (2008 and 2021), I just get a handful printed to give to family and friends. They arrived a couple of days ago and I am pleased with the print quality.

A photo from my archives, taken on 7 April 2010, at the Reader Rock Garden in Calgary.

"Hepatica (common names hepatica, liverleaf, or liverwort) is a genus of herbaceous perennial plants belonging to the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. A native of central and northern Europe, Asia and northeastern North America ... Hepatica cultivation has been popular in Japan since the 18th Century (mid-Edo period), where flowers with doubled petals and a range of colour patterns have been developed ... Hepatica is named from its leaves, which, like the human liver (Greek hepar), have three lobes. It was once used as a medicinal herb. Owing to the doctrine of signatures, the plant was thought an effective treatment for liver disorders. Although poisonous in large doses, the leaves and flowers may be used as an astringent, demulcent for slow-healing injuries and as a diuretic." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepatica

This photo was taken at the Calgary Zoo on 14th September 2009.

I had put these five photos aside when I last deleted a few more photos from my computer. Gradually, I will add the description that I had written under a different posted photo taken on the same day. I have not been getting out at all, so no new photos - until today, 23 November 2022. Our parking lot was going to have the snow and ice removed this afternoon, but apparently the equipment they brought was too large to be able to accomplish this task. As I don't have street parking, I had to kill a few hours, which usually means that I drive out of the city.

A winter day, 2010

I had put these five photos aside when I last deleted a few more photos from my computer. Gradually, I will add the description that I had written under a different posted photo taken on the same day. Not getting out at all, so no new photos. My car was covered in snow and my arm/shoulder was too painful to remove it. Somewhat less cold weather now, but we know the snow will be returning before too long. Everywhere is so icy and treacherous at the moment. First thing I absolutely have to do is go and buy a new pair of winter boots, as the soles of my present ones no longer have any grip.

"Just had to get out of the house for a short while yesterday afternoon, 22 January 2010, so drove a few of the backroads south of the city, south of Highway 22X. We had an amazing hoar frost yesterday and the day before, but the sky was so dull and so little light, which made taking photographs difficult.

I soon discovered that the roads were becoming slippery. Also found out, after plunging up to my knees in the white stuff, that the snow in the ditches that had looked pretty solid was in fact still soft beneath the upper crust! So much for getting to the barbed wire fences to take a few photos. Today, the weather is even worse, and it is treacherous underfoot. Snowing quite heavily."
