The Speckled Wood is a common butterfly, typically found in woodlands. Its appearance varies geographically, forming a cline: northern individuals have white spots, while southern ones display orange spots, leading to several subspecies. In the UK, it is common south of a line from Westmorland to South-east Yorkshire, with scattered colonies further north. It is widespread in Wales, Ireland, and parts of Scotland, though absent from southern Scotland, high ground, and northern isles. The species is currently expanding its range.
