In southern Michigan the Prairie River is shown EXPERIENCING CHANNELIZATION.

"These artificial modifications to the stream channel are UNWELCOME ARRIVALS at my eyes," I quoted myself complaining. "I am unhappy despite the sunny springtime weather conditions."

Ah the Prairie River in southern Michigan, in a resplendently spring-like rural setting one spring day.

I do not recommend drinking of it, but you can look at it.

BNSF's Grand Rapid's local, running as L-TWI619, is crossing the Prairie River just east of town along Hwy 2 behind H1 SD40-2 no. 1833 and no. 1943 still wearing its cascade green livery.
For me this was my favorite shot of the chase as we meet the train about halfway between Duluth and Grand Rapids.

Prairie River Crossing

Another check mark on this personal bucket list location. BNSF 6345 and 8579 bring up the rear of an empty coal train from the Boswell Energy Center heading east on the BNSF Lakes Subdivision. I have admired this bridge for years as well as the many photos from other photographers. Today was a "right place, right time" situation where I grumbled and snarled at the 45mph speed limit through La Prairie on US 2 but made it in time for my photo. I could finally breathe and relax with several excellent frames saved to the memory card.

No flanging across the bridge given the guard rails, but the dozer train still made for a nice shot.

While Chuck and I didn't score full sun at the Prairie River crossing we had enough "essence" to make it work. Clouds were tough west of Cloquet but the three Amigos were a worthy target.

Lesser Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis canadensis) circle over the Platte River before they settle in the shallows for the night. The cranes stay in Nebraska for 3-4 weeks eating mostly waste corn strewn in the surrounding fields. The food is so plentiful that they put on 20% of their body weight in that short time before heading north to breed.
