Sant Benet de Núrsia (480-587) és considerat el pare del monaquisme occidental. Vers l’any 540 va escriure una regla per a la vida comuna dels monjos basada en el treball, la lectura de la Bíblia i el res de l’ofici diví, que pels volts del 800 els sobirans carolingis van estendre a tots els monestirs de l’Imperi franc. La regla de sant Benet, per tant, també va ser el text de referència als cenobis de la Marca Hispànica, com el de Ripoll i les seves cases dependents, com la de Montserrat.

A la banda sud del monestir medieval es troba una preciosa galeria feta construir per la familia Casas en convertir l'edifici en residencia d'estiueig. Val a dir que és una porxada magnífica per passar-hi una tarda llegint o parlant.

In the southward looking side of the former abbey, the Casas family adapted this gallery as a relaxing spot. I must say it's a very beautiful place to stay, and has links to the Catalan traditional galleries in manor houses. The most famous of the owners was the painter Ramon Casas, who spend many holidays here.

L'antic celler d'època gòtica de Sant Benet, té la magnificencia d'una església, amb tots aquests arcs, i fins hi tot s'hi fan casaments civils, aprofitant l'espai.
Recordo visitar-ho abans de ser restaurat, i com hi havia una filada d'arcs longitudinals reforçant tota la volta, obviament posterior. Evidentment fou eliminada durant la restauració.

This is the former abbey's winery, in St. Benet de Bages. It dates from gothic times, as seen in the slightly pointed arches. Looks as magnificient as some churches, so they use it now sometimes for civil marriages (and the nearby romanesque church, for religious ones).
