Lunch Time for a Little Giant

A young Sri Lankan elephant enjoying a quiet moment with its leafy lunch in the wild. These gentle giants are a subspecies of the Asian elephant, and watching this calf feed was both heartwarming and humbling. Photographed during my journey through Sri Lanka's rich natural landscapes — moments like these are reminders of how precious and vulnerable our wildlife truly is.

Face to Face with a Musth Bull – Udawalawe National Park

In the heart of Sri Lanka’s wild Udawalawe National Park, a massive bull elephant in musth walked straight toward our safari jeep. His presence was unmistakable—towering, powerful, and fueled by a surge of testosterone that marks this intense period of heightened aggression and dominance in male elephants.

Captured in black and white, this image freezes that electrifying moment when the boundary between observer and wild nature feels razor-thin. We held our ground for a respectful moment, knowing when to stay still and when to slowly back up.

The tension was real, but so was the awe. This wasn’t just an encounter—it was a raw, unfiltered reminder of nature’s authority and the respect it demands.

Photographed ethically from a safe distance with a telephoto lens.
Black and white treatment emphasizes the drama and timelessness of the moment.

Face to Face with a Musth Bull – Udawalawe National Park

A powerful male Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) approaches our safari jeep in Udawalawe National Park. In musth—a period of heightened testosterone and aggression—this majestic bull made it clear who ruled the road. We respectfully backed up after observing him from a safe distance, standing our ground as long as we felt it was responsible.

Captured in the heart of Sri Lanka’s wilderness, this encounter was a thrilling reminder of the raw beauty and unpredictability of nature.

The Sri Lankan Elephant

The beautiful Sri Lankan elephant is 1 of 3 recognized subspecies of Asian elephants. These magnificent beasts can be found in Sri Lanka in a wildlife reserve called the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary. They prefer open savannas, open grasslands, forested regions, lake shores, and marsh lands. Due to the severely fragmented and decreasing populations, the Sri Lankan elephants are listed as Endangered by the IUCN. They suffer greatly at the hands of habitat destruction, competition with agriculture (cattle), invasive species, disease, and climate change.

First the Stats...

Scientific name: Elephas maximus maximus
Weight: Up to 12,000 lbs.
Length: Up to 21 feet
Height: Up to 11 feet
Lifespan: Up to 70 years

Now on to the Facts!

1.) Due to the construction of roads, they are unable to follow their traditional migratory routes.

2.) The Sri Lankan elephants can be differentiated from other Asian elephants by the depigmentation of their skin. Parts of their skin lack the grey coloration. This is found on their face, ears, trunk, and stomach.

3.) These highly social creatures have been seen in large matriarchal (led by a female) groups of up to 20+ elephants.

4.) As mentioned, these beasts are migratory creatures that travel along specific routes between the wet and dry seasons, as determined by the effects of the monsoon season.

5.) Due to increased agriculture, their routes have been interrupted.

Sri Lankan Elephant

Sri Lankan Elephant (Elephas maximus maximus)

The Sri Lankan Elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is a sub-species of the Asian Elephant...

This morning the surf was totally flat, so I went up the Panama Road a bit and found a side road into the bush. I found an elephant in a field, then took some photos of him and walked along the side of the fields looking for birds. Then, when I started back, he started coming out of the field towards me and charged towards me, coming a few meters away from me and trumpeting loudly and aggressively. I thought I was a goner and gonna get trampled. He stormed off into the bushes, luckily. I got out of there as fast as I could. Oh man I was so scared, I had to change my pants!
