Professor Creek is here, named in honor of reddish orange professors.

"We are chuggin thru the alluvium, even as we deposit the silts that create alluvium," chant the waters, aloud, in English, as they flow. The words become scrambled on audiorecordings but I heard them clearly with my ears while I was onsite. The chanting voices consistently pluralized "silts" but not "alluvium."

Beehives are homes of flying and buzzing "deserets."

Per the Book of Mormon, among the mass migrations that followed the events at the Tower of Babel was that of the Jaredites to North America. In the Jaredite tongue, deseret meant honeybee. And that's how come there's a beehive on all the road signs.

In southeastern Utah we are soon to pass from San Juan County into Grand County.

Are we happier to arrive in Grand County, or to exit San Juan County? Is "happier" the word that best describes how we feel when we pass from one to the other?

Golden brown area.

If you like sparse vegetation, gravel-capped benchlands, low rounded hills, badlands, and barbed wire fences, then you ought to be making plans to permanently relocate to eastern Utah. Hurry!

-----------------------

In Grand County, Utah, on August 22nd, 2022, at the "Harley's Dome View Area" off westbound Interstate 70.

According to my interpretation of page 32 of Roadside Geology of Utah 2nd edition (2014) and Macrostrat, at the left are exposures of Dakota Sandstone, formed 113 to 95.022 million years ago, during the Aptian and Albian ages of the Early Cretaceous epoch, and the Cenomanian age of the Late Cretaceous epoch.

On the rounded hills are gray exposures of Mancos Shale, formed 89.8 to 74.97 million years ago, during the Coniacian, Santonian, and Campanian ages of the Late Cretaceous epoch (per Macrostrat).

On the horizon are the Book Cliffs.

As I paced a dirt parking lot at a Bureau of Land Management recreation site in Grand County, Utah, while waiting for my assistant to arrive from Moab with my lunch order, I spotted a fine view of the cliffs of the landform "Dry Mesa." by Tim Kiser

As I paced a dirt parking lot at a Bureau of Land Management recreation site in Grand County, Utah, while waiting for my assistant to arrive from Moab with my lunch order, I spotted a fine view of the cliffs of the landform "Dry Mesa."

Funfact One: Situated between the cliffs and the parking lot is the Colorado River. You can't see it!

Funfact Two: The eastern boundary of Arches National Park is about five miles west of here. Apparently the Dry Mesa was thought not to be pretty enough for inclusion in the park.

Funfacts Three and Four: Up top are vertical cliffs of Wingate Sandstone of the Glen Canyon Group, formed ~206.7 to ~199.8 million years ago in the Mesozoic era, during the Rhaetian age of the Late Triassic epoch and the Hettangian age of the Early Jurassic epoch. Below that are diagonal cliffs of the Chinle Formation, formed ~237 to ~206.7 million years ago, during the Carnian, Norian, and Rhaetian ages of the Late Triassic epoch. Each geological formation is its own funfact. Ages are per Macrostrat).

In eastern Utah is a hillock of shale I fondly remember.

To "remember" in this case is to "look at a picture of." This hillock is a small badland.

Verily (per Macrostrat) this was a display of an exposure of the Blue Gate Member of the Mancos Shale, formed 90.825 to 74.975 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous. Ah yes the Late Cretaceous, I remember it.

Sandstones of our Cretaceousness. by Tim Kiser

Sandstones of our Cretaceousness.

Page 32 of Roadside Geology of Utah (2nd edition, 2014) tells us we're looking at Dakota Sandstone and, underlying it, the Burro Canyon/Cedar Mountain Formation. I do not know where the boundary is between the two. The authors tell us the name Burro Canyon Formation is only used on the other side of the Colorado River from here, implying that this should rightly be called the Cedar Mountain Formation, but Macrostrat calls it the Burro Canyon Formation so idk. It appears that the Burro Canyon and Cedar Mountain formations are commonly referred to in combination (here, for instance) or interchangeably, so I am not going to get wound up about it.

Macrostrat says Dakota Sandstone was formed 113 to 95.022 million years ago, during the Aptian and Albian ages of the Early Cretaceous epoch, and the Cenomanian age of the Late Cretaceous epoch. And it says the Burro Canyon Formation is 121.4 to 119.3 million years old, formed during the Barremian and Aptian ages of the Early Cretaceous epoch. Time keeps on passing!
