The one weird monopoly trick that gave us Walmart and Amazon and killed Main Street

An early 20th century grocery counter before tall shelves stacked with dry-goods. A woman grocer turns to pluck an item off the shelves. Attached to the shelves in three places are binder clips supporting small notes; each note is emblazoned with a dark red guillotine blade. To the left of the image stands a shouting millionaire with a top hat and a money-bag.

Stranded

Please view on black. This bobber was floating solo near the shore—apparently snagged and abandoned by its previous owner.

Lessons learned from this photo ... No. 1. Manual focus beats auto focus to pieces (at least on cheap lenses). No. 2. Tripods are necessary at 300mm (so don't forget and leave them at home). No. 3. The image in your head does not always appear on your card (deal with it).

Sunset

"Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the Earth are never alone or weary of life."
—Rachel Carson

My best friend, a professional photographer, told me to "stop focusing on the technical things and start focusing on the concepts and the life" of photography. I am trying to figure out what this means. All I know is photography makes me happy. There is no better way for me to relax after a long week than to pick up my camera and head outdoors. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

'Eternity in an hour'

"To see a world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour ... "
— William Blake

I like to spend the hour before sunset sitting alone on this pier. It's my happy place.

Mom at the lake

Whenever I go to Texarkana to visit my parents, I like to go out to Lake Wright Patman for a little bit. It’s less than ten minutes from my parents’ place, and it’s nice and serene, versus the obnoxious bustling of Texarkana’s strip malls. I was hoping to get some of my mom’s face in this shot too, but ah well.

Lovely tree

Taken at Wright Patman Lake near Texarkana. View On Black.

I’m a lover of trees, so when I saw the one to the left, I just had to photograph it. I waited till just about sunset, positioned my tripod so that the sun was behind the tree, and shot. I would’ve waited till sunset, but the temperature was dropping quite rapidly.

This is my first HDR photo. I’m typically not a fan of HDR, not because it’s inherently bad, but because the resultant photos often look unrealistic to me. In this situation, I didn’t really have a choice

This photo was taken in the mid-afternoon sun. Because of how bright it was, I couldn’t get any detail in the foreground without completely blowing out the sky. I ended up taking six exposures, using four of them to get the resultant image. It looks pretty realistic to me, so in that sense, I consider it a success. Hope you all like it.
