Running around 4 hours late due to industrial action in New South Wales is Journey Beyond Rail’s Indian Pacific service 4SA8 from Sydney’s Central station to Keswick via Clyde yard as Pacific National locomotives NR25/NR86 haul 34 carriages through Korunye on Thursday the 14th of December 2023.
It’s common for the Adelaide to Sydney leg of the Indian Pacific services between December and March to run as a larger consist, requiring the train to be split into thirds at Clyde to fit into Central station. Upon arrival in Adelaide, the consist will be provisioned in preparation for 5AP8’s run to Perth, NR25 will also be provisioned and spun around on the Keswick turntable in order to work the next leg of the IP’s journey solo while NR86 will return to the Adelaide Freight Terminal as a light engine for Intermodal duties.

On Australia Day 2023, a diverted 4SA8 (Indian Pacific) is seen charging upgrade at Kanmantoo (SA with nr29-nr81 in charge. For some stupid reason the idiotic crew decided to toot me & a friend at point blank range.
With the Broken Hill-Parkes line reopening on 24/1/2023, it will only be a matter of time before the IP will return to its regular route.
On Australia Day 2023, a diverted 4SA8 (Indian Pacific) is seen crossing the flooded Burdett swamp on the approach to Murray Bridge (SA with nr29-nr81 in charge. Railfan getting the shot of the diverted Sydney to Adelaide IP 4SA8 with elephant-style NR25 and NR85, as it rolls downhill through suburban Hawthorn in Adelaide’s foothills.

A couple sit in the shade on Belair Railway Station to witness the unusual sight of diverted Sydney to Adelaide IP 4SA8 with elephant-style NR25 and NR85, as it passes the historic railway station this afternoon Nov 24, 2022.
Technical note: the train stopped short of the station pedestrian crossing to the National Park and waited for 40mins as it wasn’t permitted to arrive at ARPT before 15:00. I didn’t know this at the time and went through two drone batteries waiting for the train to move. After receiving a message about the delay, I kept the drone switched out on the ground till the loco lights went on. Then it was a mad scramble to fire up the drone, connect to phone and get it airborne, in position and grab this shot as it rolled through the platform - all in about a minute! It didn’t quite make it high enough in time but … phew!!
Oh and this was the first flight of my “new” old drone, replaced under warranty by DJI after a systems failure at Coolamon after Streamliners 2022

What did that bloke say about Mad Dogs and Englishmen? Attempting to put lipstick on a pig with the diverted IP 4SA8 powered by NR25-85 running through the Adelaide Hills in the middle of the day with high summer light!
Actually I was trying to show the unusual sight of a very long passenger train in an unfamiliar environment - that is till the Great Southern starts running again soon.
