An unusual sight at this location. A London Midland Region Matisa Neptune track recording unit approaches Manchester Victoria on 4th March 1980. These units were used to record track alignment problems and would produce a readout of them. They could spray paint on the track to highlight to track maintenance staff the areas that needed attention.

TRU_Rawtenstall_6-78_1

A pretty unusual visitor to Rawtenstall in June 1978. The crew of London Midland Region Matisa Neptune track recording unit no. 50006 climb back on board, their work here must have been completed. These units were used to record track alignment problems and would produce a readout of them. They could spray paint on the track to highlight to track maintenance staff the areas that needed attention.

Matisa Track Geometry Trolley.

Taken : 09.03.1985.

Here is one for 'Tiger Tim1950' after a request to jog his memory.

There were once 13 of these Matisa SA built track assessment inspection trolleys used across the entire British Rail Network. By 1987 a new high speed vehicle entered service(DB999550) and reduced the need for these diminutive trolleys which were restricted to 20-40mph. Then in 1988 a self propelled DMU arrived to replace the last 4 in service. They were originally numbered DX50001 to DX50013 but survivors later recieved numbers in the DX90xxx series. They were built between 1957-67 by Matisa SA in Lausanne, Switzerland. They got the nickname Neptune trolleys because of the trident logo carried on the back of the cabs. There principle purpose was to record track defects and sprayed out coloured paint to mark the track at sites requiring attention. They assessed gauge, line levels and cross levels that could then be matched up to previous records to identify areas of deterioration.
