Snow Plough and Old Carriage from the Rocky Mountaineer - Leaving Kamloops enroute to Revelstroke, British Columbia, Lake Louise & Banff, Alberta, Canada

After setting out from Vancouver the day before, and an overnight stay in Kamloops, in the early morning of the 1st September 2012 we boarded the Rocky Mountaineer and commenced our days journey. Initially following the South Thompson River, to Sicamous then across to Revelstroke and over the Alberta border to Lake Louise and ultimately to our destination, Banff.
After travelling all day the previous day through the dry Fraser River and desertified Thompson River Canyons we would now be heading into very different country dominated increasingly by pine forests swiftly flowing white water rivers, large lakes and steep sided snow capped mountains.
This however would bring new challenges for photography.
More trees beside the rail line meant much greater difficulty getting decent landscape images as trees rushed up into frame out of nowhere. It was also more difficult to get longer views and the weather would become cooler with clouds and mist increasingly problematic.
With the train speeding along, trying to plan and compose shots was very much down to just plain luck so I set the camera on landscape and a rapid shutter speed and the images that follow are the result, for better or for worse.
If you recognise a place in these images I have not managed to identify or geo-tag I'd love to hear from you.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. (ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably).

With visits now in excess of 18.003 Million to my FLICKR site, used primarily these days as a fun platform to reach friends and family as I have now sold my professional gear and now take a more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to FLICKR, GETTY IMAGES and everyone who drops by.

This photograph was taken at an altitude of Seventeen metres, at 13:12pm on Friday 13th May 2016 off Broadway in the town of Skagway, the 49th State of the United States of America.

This is a snow plough train used on the popular tourist route, the White Pass and Yukon railway. The black blades rotate at speed to push the heavy snow drifts aside.

Skagway is a first class borough in Alaska, United States of America, on the Alaska Panhandle. The port of Skagway is very popular with cruise ships, and although on my visit there were none due in, I was informed that up to five per day can arrive in the high season.

Snowploughs at Perth

Is this what's waiting around the corner for us, as the near arctic like winds currently penetrate our surroundings. Nearly thirty four years ago, this was the scene at Perth as Sulzer Class 25 No 25037 prepares for action with a snowplough on each end.
Date: 18th February, 1978.
