Hope

As Dr. Jane Goodall said: "We are in the midst of 6th great extinticion of plants and animals (...) My reasons for hope? 1. Young People (...). It's our duty to educate young people so that they can make a real difference."

With hope of understanding, peace and love, I wish everyone a good Earth Day.

Green-headed Tanager is one of the most common and widely distributed species of Tangara in the forests of southeastern Brazil; its distribution also extends into southeastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina. Endemic to the Atlantic Forest region.

Andean Cock of the Rock (male) by Thelma Gátuzzô

Andean Cock of the Rock (male)

One of the most beautiful and interesting birds I've ever seen. An iconic bird of the Andes. Fairly large, significantly larger and chunkier than a thrush. Found in cloud forest at middle elevations, most often at a dawn display site where males make piglike squeals and jump and dance for females. Only similar species is Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, but no range overlap. ebird.org/species/andcot1

Picture taken in Ecuador during a bird trip. Wishing everyone a peaceful Travel Tuesday!

Collared Inca by Thelma Gátuzzô

Collared Inca

The Collared Inca is a large hummingbird and an extremely quick flier that generally stays below the canopy of moss-laden cloudforests. Both males and females have white outer tail feathers and large white chest patches, both in strong contrast to its otherwise dark plumage. While haunting its dark, understory habitat, its generally dark plumage keeps it well hidden, and the first sign of its presence is the flashing open of its mostly white tail. identifies itself in the forest by flashing open its mostly white tail. It prefers long, pendulous, tubular flowers, hovering underneath to feed. Unlike the majority of hummingbirds, the Collared Inca appears especially prone to join mixed species foraging flocks of passerines, at least for short periods of time. Several studies have investigated its reproductive biology, but there is much to learn about this large, flashy, Andean hummingbird. Picture taken at Zuro Loma, Ecuador.

Versicolored Barbet by Thelma Gátuzzô

© Thelma Gátuzzô, all rights reserved.

Versicolored Barbet

The Versicolored Barbet is a common member of mixed-species flocks in middle-to high-elevation forests on the east side of the Andes in Bolivia and Peru. It is a sexually dimorphic species, which specializes in foraging on dried leaf clusters. Though a canopy forager, the Versicolored Barbet is brightly colored and not shy, making it easy to see throughout its range. Recent taxonomic treatments have varied somewhat, and its conservation status is uncertain.

A real beauty for a Peaceful day!

Night Monkey by Thelma Gátuzzô

© Thelma Gátuzzô, all rights reserved.

Night Monkey

Night monkeys, also known as owl monkeys or douroucoulis, are nocturnal New World monkeys of the genus Aotus, the only member of the family Aotidae (/eɪˈɒtɪdiː/). The genus comprises eleven species which are found across Panama and much of South America in primary and secondary forests, tropical rainforests and cloud forests up to 2,400 metres (7,900 ft). Night monkeys have large eyes which improve their vision at night, while their ears are mostly hidden, giving them their name Aotus, meaning "earless".

Night monkeys are the only truly nocturnal monkeys, although some cathemeral populations of Azara's night monkey have irregular bursts of activity during day and night. They have a varied repertoire of vocalisations and live in small family groups of a mated pair and their immature offspring. Night monkeys have monochromatic vision which improves their ability to detect visual cues at night.

Night monkeys are threatened by habitat loss, the pet trade, hunting for bushmeat, and by biomedical research. They constitute one of the few monkey species affected by the often deadly human malaria protozoan Plasmodium falciparum and are therefore used as experimental subjects in malaria research. The Peruvian night monkey is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as an Endangered species, while four are Vulnerable species, four are Least-concern species, and two are data deficient. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_monkey
