EN: 754.067 has been back in Trutnov since autumn 2024. Fortunately, since its last overhaul in 2021, it has been shining again in its retro livery, delighting many railway enthusiasts from home and abroad. On 26 April 2025, a number of photographers were once again present as 754.067 rolled downhill through the famous curve in Červený Kostelec with the "Rübezahl Express Train" R922 Krakonoš.
EN: Slovakian state railway ŽSSKs 754 055 "Renátka" is pulling fast train R 940 "Fatran" to Vrútky trough Čremošné station with a delay of about 15 minutes. Because of track works on this day the train was formed of a replacement bus between Banská Bystrica and Uľanka and thus was delayed beyond Uľanka. Čremošné is located in the middle of the name-giving Fatra mountians and in the back the entrance to Slovakias longest railway tunnel, the Čremošné-Tunnel with a length of 4697 m, can be seen.
We were actually interested in the line that goes over the bridge in the background. This line connects the U.S. Steel plant on the left with the slag heap on the right. But we could not find a view of the line worth photographing.
Under the bridge we see 754 004 with R922 from Košice to Zvolen, which we could catch here at sunset.
Deputising for a 757 loco, ZSSK stalwart 754 014 hammers through Pezinok with R 751 'Bojnice' service for Prievidza, the working originating at Bratislava Nové Mesto.
To the right of the image are 3 examples of the Panelák ('Paneláky' - plural) style of social housing prevalent in many urban areas in former communist-era states and fostered by those regimes. The term 'Panelák' is a colloquial term in Czech and Slovak for a large panel system building constructed of pre-fabricated, pre-stressed concrete, typically showing more regard for function rather than form. This type of housing project is of course not restricted to this part of the world, many such structures being put up in inner cities in Great Britain during the 1950s. 60s and 70s, the polite term for those being 'Tower Blocks' or 'Block of Flats'.
Digressing for a moment, when I first started visiting Slovakia there was a popular TV soap opera called 'Panelák' which ran from 2008 to 2017 (becoming the longest-running television show in Slovak history) which followed the lives of a group of people living in one of these buildings in Bratislava.
I had spent a few hours at BHS when I decided at the last moment to nip up to Pezinok on R723 to try and catch whatever was heading Ex 608 'Tatran' (Gorilla 007 - result!) and hopefully a bonus of a 757 on R 751. My train got in on time at 15.11 beating the 'Okuliare' by a full 3 minutes(!) and thankfully I bagged the 350 too (after initially looking the other way at something else).
Panel beater is a term used to describe a person who restores vehicle bodies back to their factory state after having been damaged by using metalworking skills and techniques like welding as well using fillers, fiberglass, paint and polish - a bit like working backstage in Hair and Makeup at a Cher concert.
EN: České drahýs 754 012 is pulling semi-fast train Sp 1771 from Brno main station across the river Morava crossing from Uherské Hradiště into Staré Město u Uherského Hradiště, which is also its destination. Sadly, the usage of class 754 locos is said to be ending in December 2024 and they are supposed to be replaced by class 854 DMUs.
Helping to fill the void of passenger services on SK 131 between previous operator ÖBB (ceased services prematurely on 30th September) and Leo Express (commencing operation on 10th December), ZSSK's venerable Okuliare (Glasses) 754 032 departs platform 3 of Bratislava Nové Mesto (Železničná stanica Bratislava Nové Mesto to give it it's full name and worth a cool 68 points in SRSS) with a late afternoon service from BHS to Komárno.
The locomotive and members of similar classes (750, 753, 756 and 757), which were built by ČKD in the former Czechoslovakia between the late 60s and late 70s and are now spread throughout both countries, all come under the wonderful collective name(s) of Okuliare/Brejlovec (depending which side of the border you are on) for obvious reasons.
The phrase to view (or look) at a situation or memory "through Rose-Coloured Glasses (or Spectacles") refers to someone who sees things with a happy or positive attitude that fails to notice negative things, leading to a view of life that is not realistic.
An example of this (in my head anyway) would be to reflect on those days between 30/09/23 and 10/12/23 along SK 131 with lots of lovely loco-hauled services such as this one rather than contemplate the reality of Leo Express's fleet of 21 Alstom LINT 41 2-car DMUs which scuttle back-and-forth through here now every day.
