Singapore National Botanical Garden

We visited the “Cool House” in the UNESCO Heritage Botanical Garden. I’ve never before seen such lavish and gorgeous displays of orchids. Orchids are an important product here, and obviously they thrive in this hot and humid climate.

And You Thought Solar Power Was Cool

You thought solar power was cool? How about this - your own water wheel! Of course, then you'd have to have a water source. You could divert a river or stream to turn your water wheel and not only generate power for the house, you could also grind some grain on the side. The possibilities are endless. No, seriously, this is not a real house, It's an old movie set from MGM Studios. I took the shot on an old MGM movie lot before they tore it down. It was used in many movies in the 50's & 60's.

'The Creation of the World', plaster-work ceiling by Giovanni Grossi, late 18th c., Sintra, Portugal

The National Palace at Sintra was a Royal Residence for many centuries. Among the rooms open for visit is the Casa de Fresco, or 'Cool House' (Badegrotte), richly tiled and with wall piercings for cooling water jets.

The whimsical ceiling depicts a version of the 'Creation' by Putti holding set-square, calliper and plans. Partly visible here in the corners are mythological themes, perhaps representations of the four seasons.

Day 1 - Auckland Wintergardens

Dennis is fairly certain that this is the tropical house (1928) taken from the Northern Cool House.

It is definately the courtyard and pond in the middle!

Day 1 - Caesar in the cool house

The Auckland Domain Wintergardens The Wintergardens consist of two greenhouses connected by a courtyard with a large pond and a large fern garden.

This is Caesar enjoying the Cool House flowers.

Jackie, and therefore Caesar spent the 15 minutes or so taking pictures in the Cool House, Dennis made it to the courtyard, and (no surprises here for those that know us) both Dennis and Jackie made good use of facilities, so to speak!

The Northern Cool House was built in 1921. Plans for the complimentary tropical house and coonecting courtyard were made at this time, hower due to funding issues the tropical house and courtyard were not completed until 1928.

Domain seems an odd word to use, in New Zealand it means public space.
