Empty Bleachers

Central Park was the first public park in San Mateo, California. It was established in 1922 on land originally owned by Charles B. Polhemus. Among other amenities, the park currently hosts Fitzgerald Field, a large sports area that includes a baseball diamond with this uncomfortable bleacher seating.

The Stairway to the Bridge by joeldinda

The Stairway to the Bridge

I'm not sure why I visited Grand Ledge a year ago, but I parked next to the Log Jam and wandered around downtown for a bit. Then I took the scenic route home, where I found the old barn that became my daily project's photo subject.

Today's outtake shows the stairway that leads from the PONY League ballyard up to the bridge that crosses the Grand River. I like all the angles here, and the various railings.

One of Two Views of Fitzgerald Field

This ballpark has been here in Grand Ledge for as long as I can remember. I moved to Grand Ledge with my family in 1960, and it was there then. It has undergone many changes, but it has always been the home of Grand Ledge's Little League baseball team.

The path on the right of the frame will take you west towards Fitzgerald Park, if you are inclined to make the hike.

And look at all the signs on the fence from local businesses that sponsor the games.

Fitzgerald Field, as well as Fitzgerald Park, was named after Michigan's 34th and 36th governor. He was born in Grand Ledge in 1885 and died in office in 1939. This is why the Fitzgerald name is on at two important landmarks in Grand Ledge.

I remember those summers way back when baseball season was in session. If there were no bleacher seats left near the field, patrons would stand along the bridge and watch the game -- for free.

Fitzgerald Field

I headed into Grand Ledge a year ago with a specific photo in mind, which I'll talk about momentarily. Mostly, though, I just wandered around downtown GL and photographed random things. The results, to my eye, were pretty good.

Except for a vintage baseball exhibition a few years back, I've never watched a ballgame at this ballyard. I should perhaps do something about that.

==========

I'd noticed a fence near town on another Grand Ledge trip, and a photograph of that barrier was the outing's main objective. So that's what I did, and the gate's image became my photo for the daily project.

I can't say I realized how many signs they'd put up until I lined up the shot. It's pretty clear that they don't want visitors.

Outfield

I like this photo probably more than it deserves.

Ten weeks into last year's daily photo project and I'd already photographed Fitzgerald Field twice.

I think this was the last time, though. As I've mentioned, these days I tend to photograph Jaycee Park.

Another day, another PT session, this time with a new therapist. Chuck's a retired photographer, so you can guess what we chatted about while he supervised my stretches. Afterward I headed downtown again, where I found some excellent photographs of this PONY League diamond and of neighboring Island Park.

A good day.

My daily-photo posting was of ivy growing on a tree along the Ledges Trail, with the bridge to Island Park in the background.

==========

There's an Edward Jones office in the building on the photo's right, and someone I took to be a bored financial services advisor had his window open and watched while I wandered around. It felt kinda strange.

I shoulda waved....

My 2/26 Grand Ledge visit yielded some excellent photographs.

I really like this photo of the GL ballyard nestled along the Grand River by Bridge Street.

Note that this image shows the outfield signs I mentioned in another photo caption.

It's Always Light and Shadow by joeldinda

It's Always Light and Shadow

You know that's true.

I headed into Grand Ledge a year ago, parked next to The Log Jam, and wandered around a bit. My photographic "take" for the trip was pretty good.

Here we have a short section of GL's River Trail flanked by the Grand River and Fitzgerald Field. Those shadows are from signs on the ball park's outfield fence.

==========

Despite my recent preference for Jaycee Park, I still photograph Island Park occasionally. Last year's daily photo was of the parking lot shared by the ballyard and Second Island, and shows the bridge to the park on the left.

By February's end I'm generally complaining about winter. And hunting for crocuses in my yard.
