South Dana Court bridge, Milwaukee by Aaron Volkening

South Dana Court bridge, Milwaukee

This local bridge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin once crossed The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light (TMER&L) interurban railroad.

This is the South Dana Court bridge, in August 2022, looking north. The bridge was built in 1927. During the late 1920s, TMER&L interurban / streetcar railroad system built a new grade-separated, double-track main line on private right-of-way from downtown Milwaukee to the west suburbs. This line replaced a lot of street-running trackage on local streets. The bridge was built as part of that grade separation project.

This is one of the few remaining bridges from Milwaukee interurban history / the TMER&L system that I am aware of. Most of the TMER&L bridges and trackside infrastructure are long gone, though luckily some buildings still remain. The Milwaukee Northern through truss bridge across Cedar Creek in downtown Cedarburg is probably the most well-known remaining bridge.

Here's a photo of the bridge shortly after construction:

Here's another photo from an external website, of the line in service, with a Route 10 streetcar:

The bridge is included in the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Highway Structures Information System (HSI) online database. It has a structure ID of P-40-589. In 2022, a major rehab / reconstruction of the bridge was completed. One of the changes to the bridge was to narrow the bridge deck. The original steel bridge piers were left in place (and given a fresh coat of paint). You can see how much wider the bridge deck / pavement used to be. I believe this bridge was the original Hawley Road bridge, before freeway construction. It used to carry a major through street. With freeway construction, Hawley Road was rerouted to the west, and this road became a short dead-end road instead.

The interurban service ended in 1951. Most of the right-of-way was obliterated during the construction of the Milwaukee freeway system in the late 1950s. However, a few traces remain, such as here. This corridor is still used by We Energies for a high-voltage transmission line.

Celebrity Solstice: Sailing Into Ketchikan

On Day 3 of our Alaska Inside Passage cruise aboard the Celebrity Solstice, I stepped out onto our veranda to take some photos of the views as we approached Ketchikan, Alaska. I took this shot as we sailed past the downtown Ketchikan waterfront, passing the famous ''Welcome to Alaska's 1st City: Ketchikan'' sign (lower center of the frame) and a monument titled ''The Rock'' by artist Dave Rubin (toward the lower right). In the background, you can see the Cape Fox Lodge perched atop the hillside. (Apologies for the somewhat grainy pic; I was attempting to zoom in with my iPhone.)
