I read the biography of Hendrik Chabot (Leo Ott, 1981).
When Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen had acquired Vermeer's The Emmaus Pilgrims in 1938, Rotterdam artists were the first ones allowed to come and see it.
‘Chabot entered the room, with Dick Elffers. He did not even have to submit the freshly unveiled masterpiece to a close examination. Already after just a few moments, it churned out of his mouth through the reverently quiet room: ‘Totally fake!’’
They were sent out of the museum by museum director Hannema.
