En la oscuridad del bosque natural, fotografiar a esta ave no es fácil. Gestionamos nuestro jardín para mejorar la población de invertebrados y podemos observar, logicamente, un aumento significativo de aves que se alimentan de insectos grandes. La estrella es nuestro momoto, pero este atrapamoscas es un otro que ahora se ve desde nuestra terraza.

In the dark forests, taking a photo of this bird is not easy. We manage our garden to increase the invertebrate population and we can see how this attracts large insectivorous. The star is our motmot but this flycatcher is another one that is now seen from our terrace.

El césped cerca de nuestra casa solía estar sin vida cuando nos instalamos en diciembre de 2024. Con nuestra gestión a favor de la biodiversidad, ahora tenemos muchas aves que vienen a cazar insectos voladores (golondrinas, atrapamoscas, etc.) y otras que comen las semillas o los invertebrados del suelo, como zorzales, saltadores, semilleros, cucaracheros, palomas y ahora este avefría, una especie irregular en Loma Merchán.

The grassland near our house used to be lifeless when we settled in December 2024. Con our managment in favour of the biodiversity, we now have many birds coming to hunt flying insects (swallows, flycatchers, etc.) and others eating the seeds or the invertebrates on the ground such thrushes, saltators, finches, wrens, doves and now this lapwing, an irregular species in Loma Merchán.

La mayoría de las reinitas que se observan en Loma Merchán son migrantes norteamericanas. De las 20 especies de Parulidae que tenemos, solo cuatro se reproducen aquí. Tres de ellas viven en el sotobosque, mientras que solo una, la Parula tropical, es una especie del dosel.

Most warblers seen in Loma Merchán are North American migrants. Among the 20 species of Parulidae we have, only four are breeding here. Three of them live in the forest undergrowth while only one, the Tropical Parula, lives in the forest canopy.

Esta es una ave, a menudo común, que es rara en Loma Merchán debido a la buena protección de nuestra naturaleza. Tenemos otros ejemplos con la Garcilla bueyera y el Zanate caribeño. En cuanto a la garceta, el atrapamoscas llegó a Loma Merchán principalmente cuando las vacas del vecindario pastan cercana.

This bird, usually common is rare in Loma Merchán due to the well-protected nature. Other examples include the Cattle Egret and the Carib Grackle. As for the egret, the tyrants mainly reach Loma Merchán when the neighboring cows graze nearby.

En 2025, nuestro objetivo es mostrarte la mayoría de las aves de Loma Merchán. Al buscar aves, tenemos oportunidades de fotografiar otros animales, y aquí les presentamos uno. Es una especie ampliamente distribuida en Sudamérica.

In 2025, our goal is to show you most of the birds of Loma Merchán. While birdwatching, we have opportunities to photograph other animals, and here's one of them. This is a species widely distributed in South America.

Esta especie es generalmente común, como su nombre indica, pero fotografiarla es todo desafío. Es diminuta y se mueve constantemente.
Por una vez, una pareja apareció a plena luz del sol, lo que permitió una foto a alta velocidad; como resultado, el macho se ve perfectamente nítido.


This species is generally common, as its name suggests, but photographing it is a challenge. It's tiny and constantly moving.
For once, a pair appeared in full sunlight, allowing for a high-speed photo; as a result, the male is perfectly sharp.

Esta ave se encuentra de forma natural en el noreste de Colombia y el norte de Venezuela. Sin embargo, se la captura para tenerla como mascota y algunos ejemplares logran escapar. En Loma Merchán, estamos a 450 km al sur de su área de distribución natural. No es imposible que haya llegado de forma natural, pero lo más probable es que se trate de un escapado.

This bird occur naturally in North-East Colombia and Northern Venezuela. It is, however, captured to be kept as pet and some individuals can escape. In Loma Merchán, we are 450 km south of its natural range. It is not impossible that it came naturally but, the most likely, it is an escapee.

El adulto de la especie presenta un plumaje negruzco con partes desnudas amarillas, como muchos Turdus. Su manto y vientre gris-azulados distintivos facilitan su identificación. Aquí tenemos un juvenil, muy diferente: es marrón con un anillo ocular amarillo, que recuerda la apariencia de Turdus nudigenis (ver foto anterior).

The adult of the species has a classic blackish plumage with yellow bare parts, as many Turdus. Its distinctive grey-blue mantle and belly make identification straightforward. Here, we have a juvenile, very different: it is brown with a yellow eye-ring, recalling the appearance of Turdus nudigenis (see previous photo).

Esta especie es tímida y puede ser difícil de encontrar en el bosque. El anillo ocular suele ser suficiente para identificarla en Loma Merchán, pero el juvenil del Zorzal patiamarilla (o Mirla negra) es similar, como veremos en la foto de mañana. Las patas de color apagado, que se ven aquí, confirman la identificación.

This species is shy and can be difficult to see in the forest. The eye-ring is usually enough to identify it in Loma Merchán, but the juvenile of the Yellow-legged Thrush is similar as we will see on the tomorrow's photo. The dull-coloured legs, seen here, confirm the identification.

Esta pequeña especie de pico grande es uno de los numerosos semilleros de Loma Merchán. Es muy interesante entender bien sus plumajes ya que es similar a varios otros y se encuentran híbridos, en Colombia, con el Sporophila angolensis (el famoso "Curió"), encontrado recientemente en Loma Merchán.

This large-billed small species is one of the numerous seedeaters of Loma Merchán. it is very interesting to understand well its plumages as it is similar to several other ones and hybrids with the Sporophila angolensis (the famous "Curió), Chestnut-bellied Seed Finch in English (found recently in Loma Merchán), are seen in Colombia.

El nombre 'pibí' imita el llamado del Contopus virens, una onomatopeya que define bien a este pájaro. Como es también un Contopus, esta especie comparte el mismo nombre de género en español, a pesar de sus vocalizaciones marcadamente diferentes. Sin embargo, en América Latina se la conoce también como 'papamoscas' (por ejemplo en México) o 'atramamoscas', un nombre que se usa en Colombia. Un caso similar ocurre con los cucos: más de 10 especies llevan el nombre de 'cuco' por el canto característico de una sola, Cuculus canorus.

The name 'pewee' derives from Contopus virens, its call aptly transcribed as 'pewee'. As a member of the Contopus genus, this species shares the same English genus name, despite its markedly different vocalisations. This is a common occurrence in ornithology, with the cuckoos providing a striking example: over 60 species are named after the song of one, Cuculus canorus.

Entre las aves que mostramos a nuestros visitantes, esta especie suele ser una de las favoritas. Su plumaje exquisito, que combina verdes vibrantes, azules y grises con rayas y manchas intrincadas, es una verdadera obra maestra de la naturaleza.

Among the birds we show to our visitors, this species is often a favourite. Its exquisite plumage, blending vibrant greens, blues, and greys with intricate streaks and spots, is a true masterpiece of nature.

En los pájaros verdaderos (Passeriformes), una comisura desnuda suele indicar un juvenil "fresco". Sin embargo, en la mayoría de los semilleros de la tribu Coerebini, así como en el Platanero (Coereba flaveola) relacionado, los adultos también tienen una comisura desnuda. Por lo tanto, este Melanospiza bicolor es una hembra adulta o un juvenil.

In songbirds (Passeriformes), a bare gape typically indicates a juvenile. However, in most grassquits of the Coerebini tribe, including the related Bananaquit, adults also retain a bare gape. This Melanospiza bicolor is thus either an adult female or a juvenile.

Este es, de lejos, el carpintero más pequeño que se encuentra en Bucaramanga. Fotografiarlo es todo un desafío: al igual que un cucarachero o una reinita de tamaño similar, está en constante movimiento. Afortunadamente, en Loma Merchán tenemos la suerte de que sea muy común, con al menos diez parejas reproductoras en la zona.

This is, by far, the smallest woodpecker found in Bucaramanga. Photographing it is quite a challenge: like a wren or warbler of similar size, it’s constantly on the move. Fortunately, we’re lucky that it’s very common in Loma Merchán, with at least ten breeding pairs in the area.

Esta especie es una joya de Loma Merchán. Es un ave de bosque de montaña casi endémica de Colombia. Se encuentra localmente en Venezuela. Ella es discreta y poco común. Nuestro sitio, cubierto por unas 40 hectáreas de bosque, abarca, al menos, 4 territorios.

This species is a gem of Loma Merchán. It is a mountain forest bird, near-endemic to Colombia. It is found locally in Venezuela. It is inconspicuous and uncommon. Our site, covered by some 40 hectares of forest, encompasses at least four territories.
