NASA’s Artemis II Core Stage Integration Complete at Kennedy

Another element of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket for Artemis II is poised for flight. Technicians joined the core stage March 23 with the stacked solid rocket boosters for the mission at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Teams with NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program and primary contractor Amentum used one of the five overhead cranes inside the spaceport’s Vehicle Assembly Building to lift the rocket stage from the facility’s transfer aisle to High Bay 3, where it was secured between the booster segments atop the launch tower.

Teams with NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems and primary contractor Amentum, use a massive crane to lift to vertical the SLS (Space Launch System) Moon rocket for Artemis II on Saturday, March 22, 2025, inside the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The move from the facility’s transfer aisle into High Bay 3 allows technicians to integrate the 212-foot-tall core stage with the stacked solid rocket boosters onto mobile launcher 1. Ada

The old Ada tipple stands lonely in the last light of a fall afternoon. Once owned and operated by the Interstate Coal Company, Ada is now abandoned and trackless, exemplifying that no trains will be loading here any time soon.

High Line, Low Line

A brief glance at what I refer to as the Corbin yards "back door" shows 2 sets of L&N era searchlight signals still standing guard on trackage rarely used. The high line is now non-existent, and the lower track leads into a secondary wye that very seldom sees use.

CSX 882 is acting as a DPU on R608 with its train from Resource. The train had ventured down the C&M branch with only 2 engines, with 882 arriving later that night under the symbol H603 as a pusher.

Terminal's Absence

For the first time in more than a half century, Loyall no longer has an engine terminal. The memories made here, the families fed by this yard, they mean nothing to so called "progress." Sad times.

Status Report

A quick aerial shot shows the current status of the Loyall yard with recent track removal. The bulk of the damage is on the terminal side, though rumor has it that there will only be a mere 4 tracks left in the outcome.

A drone shot displays the old Ada tipple amidst the Eastern Kentucky autumn leaves. Ada was owned and operated by the Interstate Coal Company back in the day, however it is clear she won't be loading anytime soon..
