Just a couple of days ago, while spring is still starting up here in Stockholm, Sweden, I spotted this little orange fuzzball on a leaf among the flowers in front of my neighbour's house.so I dove down low with the camera. This one is a male red mason bee (Osmia bicornis) and he was probably waiting for the first females to appear (males get out and about first).
So far, I'm quite pleased with the new diffuser.

You're looking at the cute butt of a female red mason bee (Osmia bicornis) which decided to nest inside the top lock of our front door, entering the presumably very safe nest.
This was in June (back in 2017) and the bees hibernate through winter so we had to do without using the lock until spring.

The grape hyacith (Muscari botryoides) is a pretty little flower up close. As you can see, it also makes for a neat background for bugs - like this male red mason bee (Osmia bicornis) which I found during a walk through my neighborhood in early May.

This ginger bee with the black face is a red mason bee (Osmia bicornis). These guys have for several years now occupied the keyhole for the upper lock in our front door.
This one was sitting on the window sill about a week ago when I took this and yesterday I saw her (or another female) entering the keyhole to construct cells out of mud which they then fill with pollen and an egg. The next generation then hatch inside those and hibernate inside their cells in adult form.

Coming home from the super-market, I noticed this red mason-bee (Osmia bicornis) stuck in the web of a rabbit-hutch spider (Steatoda bipunctata). The spider was out, trying to deliver the killing bite.
Obviously I shifted into overdrive, ran inside and exchanged my groceries for the camera and ran back out to capture the action. By then, the spider had decided it wasn't worth it and hid somewhere while the bee spent a couple of minutes struggling before getting out of the web and flew off.

We've gotten some quite unusual guests inside the top lock of our front door. This female red mason bee (Osmia bicornis) has carried lots of mud in its mandibles and constructed chambers for the eggs inside the lock. The next generation will emerge next spring.
