XV673/27, Westland Sea King HU-5 SAR (CN WA661) of 771 Naval Air Squadron, Royal Navy photographed at the RNAS Culdrose Air Day 2015. Delivered as a HAS-1 in October 1970, the machine was upgraded throughout its life. Retired around the end of 2015, XV673 is preserved on external display at Culdrose. In common with a number of 771 Squadron machines, XV673 bears a legend relating to a famous rescue in which it participated, in this case, the yacht Drum in August 1985, owned at the time by Simon Le Bon from the popular beat combo Duran Duran. No matter what the weather, training continues…

Pictured- 814 Naval Air Squadron, RNAS Culdrose, conduct Helicopter In-Flight Refueling (HIFR) training in the fog with ground crews.

Embracing the Squadron's motto: In hoc signo vinces; (“In this sign you will conquer”), 814 NAS is a high readiness, globally deployable unit tasked with flying from ships and/or air bases around the world to provide protection to the Fleet from surface and sub-surface threats, or to support maritime security operations.
The Merlin HM Mk 2 is the UK’s primary airborne asset for Anti Submarine Warfare. As such every opportunity is taken to utilise the Merlin’s highly advanced active and passive capabilities in this demanding discipline.
