The fall of 2017 has seen a large irruption of montane bird species at lower elevations than usual. In previous years, it is quite uncommon to see Northern Flickers or Steller's Jays at the Nature Center observation area, but this fall they have been somewhat common. Normally they are run off by the more aggressive Acorn Woodpeckers. This Red-shafted NOrthern Flicker is drying off after her bath, showing some of those beautiful red feathers on her primaries.

In previous years, it is quite uncommon to see Northern Flickers or Steller's Jays at the Nature Center observation area, but this fall they have been somewhat common. Normally they are run off by the more aggressive Acorn Woodpeckers. This (Red-shafted) Northern Flicker came to the pond for a quick bath; note the beautiful red feathers on her primaries and tail.
I realized I had no photos of Red-shafted Flicker so I started searching for one at the Ajo Country Club. This male was cooperative. Notice the gray crown. Unfortunately this photo does not show the red feathers under the wings and tail. Both the Red-sahted and the Gilded Flickersare regularly present at the Ajo Country Club and I even have a photo of a Yellow-shafted seen once. Ajo Country club, Ajo, Arizona, 5 December 2016.
