G-BVVK, Loganair Twin Otter, 1/72 Revell kit. by GlasgowModelVehicles

G-BVVK, Loganair Twin Otter, 1/72 Revell kit.

My second Revell, 1/72 scale, De Havilland Canada (DHC) 6 Twin Otter and my third aircraft kit ever. My intention had only been to have one model plane as close to 1/76 scale as possible and of a Scottish operator. Though while building G-HIAL and seeing that a transfer set was available for Loganair’s standard Tartan livery, I had to build another.

The Twin Otter (“Twotter”), is a high wing, Short Take Off & Landing (STOL), twin turboprop with a tricyclic fixed undercarriage. With 2 flight crew, 0 cabin crew and capacity for 19 passengers, the Twotter has a cruise speed of 172mph and range of 540 miles.

G-BVVK was built in 1980 and arrived with Loganair in December 1994. It has worn British Airways Express and Flybe liveries in that time. Late 2017 would, however, see Loganair regain their own identity rolling out tartan number 11744 as their new livery. And in early 2018, VK received both this new paint job but also the name “Spirit of Eilidh” for Eilidh MacLeod, 14, of Barra - a regular destination for VK - and who was killed in the Manchester Arena attack.

Also included in some pictures are Loganair: G-HIAL, Twin Otter, 1/72 Revell. G-LMRZ, ATR 72-500, 1/100 “snap fit” model. Hebridean Air Services : G-HEBS, BN Islander, 1/72 Airfix.

G-LMRZ, Loganair ATR72-500, 1/100 scale

I was determined to have model representations of Scotland’s public transport across road, rail, sea and air. With this model I have achieved this goal. This is a 1/100 scale representation of G-LMRZ, an ATR 72-500. LMRZ had her first flight in October 1998, and is recorded as utilising 68 economy seats.

Loganair is Scotland’s largest regional airline, was founded on the 1st of February 1962, and is headquartered at Glasgow Airport. As of writing (Dec 2024) Loganair has a fleet of 36, serving 42 destinations and with 836 staff. In addition to the main base at Glasgow, Loganair has a number of hubs; Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Inverness & Newcastle.

Whilst not using the ATR, Loganair are responsible for operating the shortest commercial air route in the world - between Westray & Papa Westray. Furthermore they serve Barra, the only airport in the world to utilise a beach for its three runways.

As of time of writing it appears Loganair only utilise their 4 ATR 72-500’s for their cargo operations. ATR 42-5&600 and ATR 72-600 aircraft remain in passenger service (4, 2 & 9 of each).
