The design is actually inspired by a sign I saw at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. There is a service elevator located downstairs that contractors must use to transport their equipment into the building. Kind of sort of near the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts area. In front of the elevator downstairs was an office door with a note on it that said, ‘Welcome Welcome.’ I would stare at it sometimes while we waited for the elevator. Ahhh, I can still hear that elevator sound, hummmmmmmmmmmm.

It’s funny what will stick in one’s mind; more than most of the museum’s artwork, it was that note that found space in my brain. (Plus, the Joan of Arc painting by Jules Bastien-Lepage, I always liked that piece.)

I purchased a framed print by the artist Lucas from Goodwill Thrift Store (1239 University Ave W) in St Paul, MN. The picture is a still life with bottles, tomatoes, grapes, and garlic. In the image, the table at the bottom appears to be jutting out at the viewer in an optical illusion, but I’m not sure if that is in the original painting or not. I couldn’t find any info on the artist.

I painted a Ben Franklin rubber duck on the print and returned this ‘new’ artwork back to the same thrift store on 03/02/2025, around 4:52 pm.

I purchased a painting by the artist els (or maybe e/s) from Hidden Treasures Thrift Store in NE Minneapolis, MN. The landscape painting shows twelve red flowers blooming in a dirt field under warm, golden skies. Originally painted on 05/18/2013 (noted on back) 18 x 24.”

I completed a new hotdog sign this week for a collector in Pennsylvania. Apparently she used to work in the carnival as a kid and has a collection of signs in her home. I sent her three iterations for the design, and this is the one she chose. (Her only request was that I add a ‘$.25’ symbol to the work.)

I just finished a new mural at Las Estrellas Dual Language School in Northeast Minneapolis, MN. It features five starlike, dancing figures painted in the school’s brand color palette, with English/Spanish text surrounding each shape. The colors used and their meaning are mirrored in the text;

Pink - We are student centered - Student Centered/Centradas en el estudiante
Green - We are dual language - Bilingual/Bilingues
Red - We value equity - Equity/Equidad
Yellow - We are multicultural - Multicultural/Multiculturales
Blue - We are all gifted - Gifted/Dotados

This mural project was actually initiated a year ago when one of the Las Estrellas elementary school teachers was selected to receive the 2023 Minneapolis Educator Leadership Awards (MELA). Administered by the organization Achieve Twin Cities, in partnership with the John & Denise Graves Foundation, the award “funds creative projects that impact student achievement, go above and beyond to better students' lives outside the classroom, and improve our school communities.” Upon receiving the award, the teacher contacted me about painting a mural at her school that focused on its student values. After a couple of idea sessions, we came up with a plan of action for the painting.

The mural took about three days to complete. And believe it or not… the biggest obstacle was actually the hot weather (in Mpls?!?! I know right?) But I learned quickly that it was easier to start painting after 2 pm when the sun was behind the building and it wasn’t too hot.

But when all was said and done, the project went smoothly! Hopefully future students will be able to find some sort of inspiration from the work. Thanks to everyone involved who helped to bring this mural to fruition!! I appreciate it!
