Landing on the beach

Access to almost all of the parks of Alaska (and to much of northern British Columbia) is via small planes such as this Cessna 206, landing on the beach in Lake Clark National Park. Bush planes are an essential way of getting around the vast wilderness areas of Alaska, which has a plane for every 80 people. Cook Inlet, Alaska.

Homing in on a scent

A rim of saliva appears around the open mouth and dropped lower lip of this Alaska brown bear as she continues to track the source of an interesting scent across the sand. A driftwood tree and sea wrack litter the beach. Cook Inlet, Alaska.

Sea wrack

A diverse selection of dried sea weeds and beach rocks lies at the high tide line, K'uuna Llnagaay (Skedans), Louise Island, Gwaii Haanas, BC. Sea wrack is an important ecological link between land and sea, providing food for beach animals and, as it decomposes, nutrients for kelp and other offshore plants.
