This may be the reddest rock I have ever seen. I visited Bryce some years ago also with snow on the ground and it was pretty colorful as well. The snow precluded me visiting more of this park which could last well beyond its intended opening near the first of May. Still, it’s beauty and majesty and odd shaped hoodoos are a sight to behold. Cedar Breaks is located in southwestern Utah just east of Cedar City at nearly 10,000’ foot elevation.
Staying above the snow line here! You can see the line in the valley behind Himmy.. So down in the valley where I took the Ladybower pictures, there is no snow. But up here I have to be a bit more careful on the roads..
You can see the lovely Mam Tor over on the horizon too!
I didn't try to go up and over that on the bike this time!!
I'm still troubled with my right knee ligaments after a stumble descending Riggindale Ridge last week, so I thought a less strenuous walk around Wastwater would be dooable!
Getting here was a bit of an issue with all the snow in the South Lakes, but once I made the West coast near Millom, the snow became almost non existent. Consequently Wastwater was unbelievably quiet. I had the place more or less to myself. I pottered around and took a few different compositions.
I had never singled out Scafell in previous visits, favouring the classic shot looking up the head of the Lake with the triumvirate of Lingmell, Great Gable and Yewbarrow in view.
So I went up towards the top of the Lake and took this with a nice bit of light on the top of Scafell Pike. This was taken with a 6 stop filter to smooth out the water of the lake. Lingmoor sits nicely above the clearly defined snowline on the left then the West face of Scafell Pike leads around to Lords Rake and the top of Scafell. It is just a shame that you can't see England's tallest peak in most shots taken from lower down on Waswater's banks.
Anyway, I'm glad I got this image at last and my knee wasn't unduly troubled. Hopeful it heals quickly and I can get the crampons and Ice Axe out and get up there!
When you have a destination, the time seems to go quickly and there is so much to see. On the way back, however, it can seem to take forever. With that in mind, we took some detours to keep it interesting. This part of the Icefields Parkway at top of The Big Bend certainly provided some spectacular views. We still had snowfall warnings for the higher passes and you can see where that line is in the mountains ahead.
As for the image itself, with the darker forest and lighter skies, it was a very contrasty scene and required a fair bit of editing to keep the details in both those extremes. I was standing at a pullout on the hairpin turn for this view.
