Bristly Clubmoss -- Spinulum annotinum

Mink River Preserve, near Ellison Bay, Door County, Wisconsin.

This plant was formerly in the genus Lycopodium. Here it is growing next to and over the rotting log of a paper birch (Betula papyrifera). I like the interesting character of birch bark with its many noticeable lenticels and peely bark. Both alive and dead it is an interesting tree to include in photos.

Merlin View Loop Hike, West Bragg Creek - Lots of green, but no flowers

I didn't know what this was, but found out it is: Spinulum annotinum, interrupted clubmoss.

This was a 15 km hike, gaining 600 m's when all the ups and downs are added, taking 4 hours, 20 minutes. We walk almost every day, and this is our third hike in the wilder parts of the foothills around Calgary this year. Until today, we had not seen a single wildflower, it's been a very delayed spring! This is a Prairie Crocus, not actually a crocus as you can see, it is a Purple Pasque Flower more exactly. But since it's been seven months without seeing any flowers outdoors, flower lovers will permit the appropriation of the term that says spring to so many people.
