The End of The Line

The view looking west across Lavender Bay from the Colannades Lookout at Cliff Street, Milsons Point. Across the bay are all the houses & apartments of McMahons Point.

In the foreground you can see the former North Shore railway line which now ends abruptly at Luna Park. Prior to the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, and the construction of Luna Park in 1935, this precinct was a huge (and ugly) railway terminal where passengers would transfer to the ferries that took them across the harbour to the city. It was also a commercial port facility.

In 1932 the North Shore railway line was re-directed up onto the 'new' harbour bridge. In this historical aerial photograph from 1930 you can see where the 'end of the line' met the site that is now Luna Park:

Winding down to the end of Morandoo as a PN depot thanks to the Ziklag and Project 2025

Since Pacific National have elected not to renew the lease on Morandoo yard it's going to be stripped of everything and then another rail operator (SSR? Qube? Aurizon?) are set to move in.

Tra ra ra boom de ay...

Teoryang Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay is a linguistic theory that suggests words derive their meaning from the sounds associated with them, emphasising the connection between sound and meaning. It explores the significance of onomatopoeia and sound symbolism in language.

Coming tothe end of Pacific National operating trains for Manildra. This is 5936 (4 locos + 52 wagons for 4300 tons) loaded at Penny's Road (Grainflow near Bellata NSW) just after parking the train up in Enfield yard with 8243 leading three other 82 class locos.

At the end of October 2024 PN's contract with Manildra ends and SSR takes it over. Manildra has directly purchased brand new shinkwrapped EMD GT-46 locos made by Caterpillar (Progress Rail) in the USA (not manufacured in Australia) and brand new wagons (not sure but presumably made in China).

All admin staff, yard staff and train crew are being made to relocate over to the 'dark side' (pn coal building).

Morandoo will probably get taken over by Qube or Aurizon in connection with getting operating rights to a new container terminal yet to be built on the former bhp steelworks site.

Saab Salvage is now winding down after 17 years since transitioning from Saab Serve

Steve Emanuel started working on Saab cars in 1988 and was a business partner at Saab Serve (when it was still at North Parramatta on Barney St), and subsequently sold his share of that in 2007 to start up Saab Salvage, which in 2024 he is closing down due to wanting to retire.
