Fishing Cat, Exmoor Zoo, Bratton Fleming, North Devon, UK by Ministry

Fishing Cat, Exmoor Zoo, Bratton Fleming, North Devon, UK

As the name suggests, fishing cats primarily hunt for fish. They're powerful swimmers, even underwater, but it seems the commonly-ascribed characteristic of webbed toes is exaggerated, and other cats demonstrate greater webbing. However, their short tails and small, low-set ears on long, sleek heads may be adaptations to hunting in mangrove swamps. They're remarkably well camouflaged, too – I'm presenting this in black and white solely to increase the visual contrast.

This is Frodo, a "middle-aged" male who is registered within the European breeding programme but who has so far proved to be too solitary, preferring to retire to his shed.

One of my favourite zoos (and we've visited quite a few), Exmoor Zoo has a remarkable collection of species, particularly mammals rarely seen in other UK zoos – I'm particularly drawn to their ten different cat species. Unfortunately, in a rural location near(ish) Barnstaple, it's also the UK zoo furthest from home (fully five hours each way), so visiting is a rare treat.

Mulligan's Flat NR, Canberra, Australia. Animal here part of a reintroduced population in a fenced nature reserve to exclude introduced predators.

Shot in the dark with IR illumination, this shy predator out and about hunting, after watching me for awhile. Frame grab from Video which can be seen at vimeo.com/489342093
