Since the 1962 photograph was taken the underground 'Gents' has been filled in and the former cinema is vacant.
This cinema was opened by PCT (Provincial Cinematograph Theatres) on September 17th 1928. It remained the New Victoria until 1952 when it was re-named the Gaumont. In 1962 The Rank Organization became the new owners. Rank completely remodeled the premises and one year later re-named it the Odeon (cinema) for the upper level and the Top Rank (nightclub) for the area that formerly occupied the stalls. Unable to compete with the new multiplex theatres springing up, the cinema closed completely on Sept 12 1992
