Torren moods

Torren moods - The delightful and charming Torren Lochan in very early autumn with just a hint of the autumn colours that are yet to come. A moody afternoon with the trees reflected in the unexpected still waters of the lochan.

Torren in autumn - The delightful and charming Torren Lochan in autumn with the golden trees reflected in the supremely still waters of the lochan. Tucked away in Glencoe, it’s a real calming place of peace and tranquillity.

Achtriochtan trees. by Scott Robertson (Roksoff)

Achtriochtan trees.

As you travel in to Glencoe from the west there's a small group of battered, bedraggled stunted trees which sit in wet boggy unfertile ground just east of Loch Achtriochtan on the exposed glen floor.
They've had a hard life growing in such hostile conditions. Every time I pass I always feel sorry for them what with all the great views and scenes around getting all the attention.

I've often meant to stop in an attempt to make them in to a picture but always had somewhere else to be.
On Sunday, with a little time to kill, I decided to use that time to take a closer look at that wee crop of trees.

The sun had long set so light was very limited but I think it adds to the muted colour and subtle tones.

Aonach Dubh and An t-Srón in Glen Coe

A view near the bottom end of Glen Coe. This panorama, interesting as it is, gives a totally wrong impression. Glen Coe is a glacial valley with relatively flat bottom and very steep walls. You're looking at a 500-metre tall wall almost overhanging the road. But I don't know a better way of registering that with a camera.

Aonach Dubh is made of andesithic lavas (whose dark colour explains the Dubh part of the name) overlain by the paler rhyolithic ignimbrites. The gully on the face of An t'Sron marks the line of the Glen Coe Ring Fault; the rest of An t'Srón is granite of the ring intrusion [N. H. Trewin, The Geology of Scotland]. Glen Coe is the type locality for cauldron subsidence; it was here that such features were first described.
