Bobcat playing in the snow

In this action shot, a bobcat tries to catch a treat in some fresh snow, surrounded by flying snowflakes. The short tail that gives rise to its name is visible on the snow. This is a captive animal, but bobcats (aka red lynx) are common throughout southern Canada and the US.

Arctic fox with mouse in mouth

A favourite food of Arctics foxes in the wild are rodents, especially lemmings. Some dog breeds (dachshunds, terriers) also catch rodents, and wolves, huskies and elkhounds all dive down through the snow to capture rodents. Captive animals such as this Arctic fox, as well as ferrets, snakes, hawks and owls, etc., can be kept healthy by feeding them frozen mice that are widely available through pet shops.

Arctic fox hunting by tmeallen

Arctic fox hunting

A captive Arctic fox, with its warm white winter coat and bushy tail, in a hunting pose with its nose lowered to the snow and raised paw. The foxes can smell rodents living under the snow and they are their favourite natural prey, but they will also scavenge carcasses and eat pretty much anything in times of food scarcity. I've seen a lot of these foxes in the high arctic where they seem to like hanging around settlements where they have more chance of a scavenged meal.

Sad Grizzly Bear?

This is the last in a series of three photos. After appearing to be intimidated by a male Kodiak bear almost twice her size and moving to the other side of the enclosure, this female grizzly bear appeared to be feeling sad.

This is either Montana or Cody. The two sisters came to the zoo in 2016 as orphan cubs and they each weigh approximately 600 pounds (272 kg). Seen at the Toledo Zoo.

This is the second in a series of three photos. In response to a much larger bear walking towards her, this female grizzly bear quickly moved to the other side of the enclosure.

Bear Intimidation?

This is the first in a series of three photos. In this photo, the bear in the background, a female grizzly bear, was minding her own business in the far end of the enclosure. Then Dodge, the male Kodiak bear in the foreground, started walking towards her. Dodge is almost twice as big as the other bear.
