Tonight is my talk on Charles Eames in the 1930s, Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at 6:30 pm. The talk is live in-person at the St. Louis Public Library’s Central Branch at 1301 Olive Street, St. Louis, Missouri 63103 in the Auditorium on the lower level. Anyone interested to attend in person is encouraged to do so. The Steedman Architectural Library will be open to tour in advance of my talk, from 6 pm to 6:30 pm. The event is a great opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones. Many people have noted that they plan to attend in person.
The library sent out a notice reminding people of the “Online Event” which is great, however, they neglected to mention that attending in person is encouraged! Coming in person is encouraged.
If you haven’t registered yet, you can still do so. There are limited seats for the online Zoom livestream, but the Auditorium has plenty of open seats! If you’ve already signed up, you don’t need to do so again, especially if you’ve received the reminder from the library.

View of light fixture from below. Eames was challenged to incorporate electrical lighting into a Medieval-era design for a hanging candelabra based on an example in Basilica San Marco, Venice. He inserted two cylinders into the form of the ancient pendant. Electrical lighting was concealed within these twin cylindrical elements.

The altar rail initially separated the congregation from the altar and chancel. It originally featured swinging panels with inscribed symbols of the faith. After the Second Vatican Council, the altar rail was removed and relocated to another part of the sanctuary.

EAMES Ecclesiastical • St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Helena, Arkansas (1934-1936). Detail of side entry door. Eames and Walsh Architects. Emil Frei studio: stained glass.
.
.
.
Many congregation members use this entrance into the north transept as it is closest to the main parking area. It is the only other entry point into the church besides the main portal. The diamond geometry of the door lends itself to depictions of the four evangelists. They are the angel for Saint Matthew, the eagle for Saint John, the lion for Saint Mark, and the ox for Saint Luke. They have been lovingly rendered by Emil Frei, creating an intimate encounter at eye level with these representatives of Christ.

EAMES Ecclesiastical • St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Helena, Arkansas (1934-1936). Brick ogee arch and glazed tile tympanum. Eames and Walsh Architects. Emil Frei Studio: glass tile mosaic.
The monumental arch over the main portal lacks a keystone or other suggestion of immense loads. Instead, the bricks coming together at the joint between the left and right portions of the arch are sliced into thinner, lighter pieces, offering a sense of relief from the overbearing burden of gravity and life’s challenges. The tympanum is filled with glass mosaic tiles set by the Emil Frei Studio, which refer directly to heaven in its forms and colors. Tightly coordinated geometry links the stairs, stepping upward to the right and left with repeated triangles pointing heavenward. This series of three triangles reflects the Trinity, and this form will reappear over the altar in the figural forms of the mural by Charles Quest. There is a transparency of meaning and symbolism reappearing in several guises as we move through our experience of entering and engaging in the rituals of the mass.
EAMES Ecclesiastical • Light fixtures. St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Helena, Arkansas (1934-1936), top two. Pilgrim Congregational Church, St. Louis, Missouri (1932), bottom left. Eames and Walsh Architects. Charles Eames: light fixture design.

I’ll be giving an illustrated slide talk on Tuesday, November 28, at 6 p.m. Central Daylight Time. The talk will be presented live at the St. Louis Public Library’s Central Branch in the main auditorium. I would love to have you attend in person, if possible. It is also available as a live stream (see link below). The Steedman Architectural Library and the Society of Architectural Historians sponsor my talk. The Steedman Library is a fantastic resource that anyone interested in architecture and the allied arts should consider visiting in person for the collection of books as well as for the antiquarian gentleman’s library aura of the 1920s addition to Cass Gilbert’s masterful Beaux-Arts building in downtown St. Louis.
