The town of Óbidos is located on a hilltop, encircled by a fortified wall. The Porta da Vila is the main gateway into the town. Obidos remains a well-preserved example of medieval architecture; its streets, squares, walls and its massively towered castle built by King Dinis are a popular tourist destination.
Also known as “The Wedding Town”, Obidos was the traditional bridal gift of the kings of Portugal to their queens, a custom begun in 1282 by King Dinis and continued until the 19th century. The town has hardly changed in appearance since then: its narrow, cobbled streets and steep staircases wind up to the ramparts, from where you can gaze across a countryside of windmills and vineyards.
