'Bats at the Crypt by Su_G' in cocktail napkins mockup (c/o Spoonflower & Roostery). I think my design looks quite cute in these little napkins (10" x 10", for a closer look: www.spoonflower.com/en/home-decor/dining/cocktail-napkins...).

This was my entry in Spoonflower's 'Ditsy Lizards' Contest (2015). My inspiration was the (then) recent reporting of a community of lizards in the Caribbean, preserved for 20 million years in amber, and identical to their modern cousins [‘Ancient lizards in amber amaze scientists’ by Stuart Gary, ABC Science].
Along the way I learned that lizards - which include geckoes - have five fingers or toes, while newts have four. Lizard science!

I considered doing plastic rubbish as it is the major thing flooding our beaches this summer, but couldn’t bring myself to it. Instead I went back to the past for inspiration, before plastic began. I can imagine this design looking fabulous on a swimsuit or summer tote (as per the design brief), which I found a useful criterion to assess my ideas (although I'm sure a more skillful designer could make even plastic rubbish look sexy).

A photograph I took last summer was my inspiration
www.flickr.com/photos/66403770@N06/31866840607/. I added scattered pollen dots just for fun & to break up the background - and they could potentially disguise food spots on napkins & tablecloths...
