While out boating on the Noosa River this recent boxing day, I encountered this sizeable sand bar that was being used by a large flock of roosting Crested Terns. Noosa River, QLD Aus.

’Reading transports us by Su_G': My entry in Spoonflower's 'Cozy Reading' Design Challenge. (Wallpaper mockup c/o Spoonflower).
Ink pen + paper, after Lucienne Day.
© Su Schaefer 2020
I was struck by some of the really interesting things that people - often authors themselves - have said about 'reading'. A sample of those I was thinking about as I worked my design:
-- Reading transports us - to other lives, times, places. [—my version but pretty sure lots of others have also said this]
-- If there was more reading there would be less war. [—if Yoko Ono didn't say this I must have been channeling someone else]
-- Reading—the best state yet to keep absolute loneliness at bay. —William Styron
-- Reading makes immigrants of us all. It takes us away from home, but more important, it finds homes for us everywhere. —Jean Rhys [my personal favourite]
and the rather more flippant:
-- People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading. —Logan Pearsall Smith

The pictures of their clay - at East Fork East Fork: how we make it - are almost as good as my pictures of paint. You just long to feel it in your hands. I really enjoyed working with the colour scheme to match the ceramics, one of the nicest ever!

I designed this with cheater quilts in mind but I love the way it looks as wallpaper! I think it's these colours, which I'm also in love with.

'Patriotic Public Health Buttons by Su_G': 1960s campaign style buttons in patriotic red, white and blue, pinned on a white coat! (fabric mockup c/o Spoonflower)
Hand-drawn.
© Su Schaefer 2020
Relates to 'Public health saves lives by Su_G': my psychedelic entry in Spoonflower's Designs for Good Design Challenge.
My inspiration for these came from a fabulous book of 1960s photographs which included some from around the 1968 Nixon campaign - which I have then subverted for a cause dear to my public health heart. It has been so dispiriting to have to explain over and over again that asking individuals to do things that benefit the group (keep everyone healthy) benefits the individual as well as everyone else.

'Tools for Writers, Printers, Readers: Drawn Alphabet by Su_G' - face cover mockups (c/o Spoonflower & Roostery)
My entry in the Spoonflower's Small-Scale Tools of the Trade Design Challenge.
Hand-drawn with 'digital' pen.
© Su Schaefer 2020
When I started thinking about small scale tools of the trade for this contest (which I understood as meaning that the tools were small) the alphabet came last after 6 or 7 other ideas, but then it stuck. Our alphabet has a long and fascinating provenance and could make a fun and non-frightening theme for face covers: so I made it bright and colorful! --This advertisement brought to you by the letter 'S'.
The link for voting was www.spoonflower.com/contest_voters_temp/new?contest_id=560 - open for one week only. There were 505 entries in this contest, addressing an amazing variety of tools and trades.

'Tiny maneki neko lucky cats in strips by Su_G' in face cover mockups (c/o Spoonflower & Roostery) © Su Schaefer 2015
I think these 'lucky cat' motifs could make nice, non-threatening face coverings, and they feel appropriate as I feel we're going to need all the luck we can get in the coming times.
Spoonflower has a "Buy one, we donate one (partnership with Masks Now)" offer too.
Each tiny lucky cat is a little more than an inch/ 2.5 cm high, and there are 6 strips of 9 cats to an 8 inch/ 20 cm square fabric test swatch.
