Not far from Loiyangalani village and overlooking Turkana Lake , the village of the eponymous ethnic group is located on a sandy and stony desert terrain where sparse vegetation grows, yet it is sufficient to feed the herds of sheep and goats. The fish from the lake provide a nutritional supplement to the villagers, who also benefit from aid from humanitarian organizations.

Lake Turkana, a lake in the Rift Valley, was formerly called Lake Rudolph, named after an Austrian explorer who discovered it in 1888, in honor of the crown prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. 290 km long, it is located mostly in Kenya and receives the waters of the Omo River via a large delta. Its sodium-saturated waters are of limited interest. Currently, for reasons that may be tectonic, the lake level is rising, like that of other lakes in the East African region. This phenomenon, observed since 2019 and 2020, poses a huge environmental challenge in the region. Lake Turkana's water levels in February 2024 are 0.8 m higher than those in February 2023 (the record year in the period 1992–2023).

A Nilotic-speaking people, the Turkana inhabit the arid territories of northern Kenya near Lake Turkana and South Sudan. Protected by the poverty of their region, they have long remained unaffected by major foreign influences. Nomadic pastoralists adapted to an almost entirely desert area, they practice supplementary fishing in Lake Turkana.
The Turkana are polygamous. The family unit consists of a man, his wives and children, and often his mother. Turkana society is structured according to age groups, and each man belongs to a specific age group. The Turkana have an intimate knowledge of the plants and products they use as medicines.

“The U.S. Signal Corps at Work” by Frederic Remington in “Collier’s,” March 17, 1900.

“A branch of service that has done its duty with undaunted bravery and fortitude is the Signal Corps of the United States Army in the Philippines. Seldom mentioned in the newspaper reports, without hope or desire for notoriety, these men have performed their work with that cool-headed courage and contempt for danger that characterizes the American artisan in the pursuit of his calling. The thing is simply beyond praise. – Extract from a personal letter from our Correspondent in the Philippines.” [Text accompanying the image]

In March 1900, the Philippines was under American control following the Spanish-American War. The United States had acquired the Philippines from Spain through the Treaty of Paris in December 1898, marking the start of the American colonial period. However, this period was marked by conflict, as Filipino revolutionaries, led by Emilio Aguinaldo, resisted American rule in what became known as the Philippine-American War.

While the Philippines was not officially termed a "colony," it was governed as a U.S. territory under military rule at the time. The conflict between American forces and Filipino insurgents continued, with significant battles occurring throughout 1900. The situation was complex, as the U.S. aimed to establish control while facing resistance from Filipinos seeking independence.

St. Catharines Fire responded to a three-storey condo building under construction in the area of Collier and Melbourne Streets after multiple 9-1-1 callers reported a fire on the roof. Crews encountered smoke and flames coming from the roof on arrival and worked to make access. The fire was quickly brought under control without flames spreading further to the rest of the building. Damages were estimated at approximately $250,000 and there were no reported injuries.
