Jens Earl Nelsen was born 3 Aug 1925 in Halfway, Michigan and died 30 Dec 2005. On 9 Jun 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, he married, Shirley Irene Whitman (1923-1989). The marriage ended in divorce on 13 Aug 1946, in Cheboygan, Michigan. They had no children. On 3 Jul 1950, in Lucas Co., Ohio, he married Rhoda Esther (Babcock) Shellenberger (1926-2002). They had two children: Janice Elaine (1947-1999) and David Earl (1948-).

Richard Kent Nelsen was born 11 Jun 1931 in Detroit, Michigan and died 10 Apr 2006 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He is buried in Saint Pauli Cemetery, Hendrum Township, Minnesota. He never married.

George Bradley Nelsen was born 8 Oct 1934 in Detroit, Michigan and died 14 Apr 2023 in Arizona. He was married five times. Was not able to find any information on his first marriage, which ended in divorce. On 13 Feb 1960, in Winchester, Virginia, he married Clara M. Vrabel (1935-2007). They had two daughters: Debbie Marie and Mary Ann. On 18 Apr 1870, in Winchester, Virginia, he married Victoria Fedele (1927-2010). They had no children. On 26 Nov 1976, in Reno, Nevada he married Joanne Scripter Periman. This marriage ended in divorce on 10 Mar 1978, in Washoe Co., Nevada. On 28 Apr 1980, in Reno, Nevada, he again married Joanne Scripter Periman. This marriage ended in divorce on 21 Oct 1991, in Washoe Co., Nevada. They had no children.

"Swans of Water and Ice" by Patti Deters. A small group of Trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) gather in the frigid waters of a small pond near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, USA. Some of the beautiful large white birds rest on the ice, while others swim gracefully in the icy blue water. One swan is flapping her wings which adds dynamic movement to the peaceful outdoor scene. CP 8789 leads train 241 north of Detroit Lakes after crossing the diamond crossing with the BNSF Staples Subdivision. It was serendipitous that I was turning north on US 59 right when this train was making a similar northbound turn underneath the US 59 and US 10 intersection. I would have a train to follow up to Thief River Falls! This was the first in a series of several photo location between Detroit Lakes and Plummer where I would lose light and diverge from paralleling the railroad.

The CPKC Holiday Train passes Soo Pass Ranch while approaching Detroit Lakes for the next of the day’s performances and food drives.

For the past couple of months, I have been studying the work of Stephen Shore, William Eggleston, and Saul Leitner. Mainly because I find the work that they do pretty fascinating. Basically, they have this ability to capture the everyday environment around them in a way that engages their audience.
Earlier this week, I came across this location and immediately thought about how Stephen Shore would capture this scene. After getting it back on the computer, I realized that the "digital" feel to the photo just did not work.
I used an application called Nik Analog Efex Pro 3 to give the photo more of a film look.
I did a little research since I wasn't sure if this place was abandoned, out of business, closed for the season, or what. There are details that don't make sense for an abandoned property like the pool tools hanging on the wall, and what appears to be a couple of new windows. On the other hand, paint is peeling, and the pool is pretty disgusting. As it turns out, the business has been closed for over 15 years, but is for sale.
