Observatory House was designed by James Craig and completed in 1872. It was intended to be used as the city observatory but due to lack of funds, no equipment could be bought.
The Duguld Stewart Monument, in memory of the Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart (1753–1828), is modelled on Tower of the Winds in Athens, by Lysicrates.
