15 Apr: A can of worms

A brief visit to the composter and recycling bins in the back garden formed the inspiration for this photo. The composter had a plentiful supply of earthworms, and I temporarily retrieved a cleaned, dried can from the recycling bin. No animals were harmed during the making of this picture, and all were safely returned to nature.

The Song Thrush

I have heard and seen many song thrushes (Turdus philomelos) many places the last days and weeks- from forests far inland to small forests right by the ocean.

I haven't edited the new photos, so here is a song thrush memory from the archive, from the southernmost point of our municipality.

The song thrush breeds throughout most of Europe, and is further distributed in a belt through Russia and Siberia east to Lake Baikal. It also breeds in northern Turkey, the Caucasus and northern Iran. It has also been introduced and established in Australia and New Zealand.

Birds from Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Russia winter around the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East.

Common Pheasant / phasianus colchicus. Suffolk. 20/04/16.

'JUST A COMMON PHEASANT.'

You really do have to be blessed with a close encounter in favourable light, to really appreciate the subtle colouring of a female pheasant's plumage. This image marks an occasion when I had both back in 2016.

Northern Lapwing / vanellus vanellus. Morston Quay, Norfolk. 14/01/16.

'CRESTFALLEN.'

I've had to dig really deep in my files to retrieve this image of a lone Lapwing I photographed at Morston Quay, 9 winters ago! It favoured a raised, grassy bank, in-between the car park and boat storage yard and worked its way back and forth methodically, finding plenty of large earthworms to eat. I remember the weather that day was atrocious with a biting, icy wind and shortly after the image was made, a sudden sleety blizzard. It created a total white-out for a moment or two, before melting.

It was all very dramatic and in sharp contrast to conditions there today when I visited ... blue sky, wall to wall sunshine and only a light breeze. Sadly though, apart from several Brent Geese flyovers, plus 2 x Oystercatchers, c10 x Teal and the obligatory BHGs, there was nothing else of interest.

11/06/2024 An invitation by Woburn Safari Park (Katie Chapman ) for BNHS/BIG members to carry out another survey of their native flora and fauna, thus continuing an almost annual association since 2014.
The day and month in weather terms so far has/wasn't conducive to finding invertebrate animals but it didn't stop a good assemblage of enthusiasts before 10am by the Woburn Lions where we were greeted by Katie and fellow employee Amy. We convoyed from there through the park passing Rothschild Giraffes, Rhinos and Elephants to the main car park at the centre where we transferred to the park Land-rovers and first on to the emptied rhino paddock for our first area of interest. SP97103452 which we entered through the rhino house and a series of challenging narrow gates . Here the gang spread out far and wide in a hunt for their target species. For me the highlight was a very fresh Broad-Bodied Chaser and 3 very inquisitive Ostriches outside the enclosure..
After an hour or so we moved on to another even larger area of wooded grassland from which it's occupant, a beautiful Somali Wild Ass (Equus africanus somaliensis) had been temporarily evicted

Have you ever wondered...

Have you ever wondered why earthworms emerge from the ground on rainy days? I have, so when on December 18, 2023--an unusually warm (51-degree) day with heavy rain in Troy, New York--I observed many of them in my apartment building's parking lot, I did a little research on the subject! Here is an article with some interesting info on the subject! www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-earthworms-surface... This photo will provide a little transition between poinsettias & another group of photos!
