LNER Bedlington Station - view south towrds Bedlington South Signal Box (NER - 1898) and level crossing. At the time of this image (3rd August 1987) the station was disused as this was a freight-only line, the NER Station having closed on 2nd November 1964.
Now the Northumberland Line to Ashington has opened (on 15th December 2024) all that survives apart from the track is the signal box. Construction of a new station at Bedlington began in 2022 and is still in progress.

With Derby Litchurch Lane 1971 built MK2D Brake Standard open Coach 9481 tucked in front.

Thought I'd pop round on impulse to Peak Forest on my way back to my depot at Dove Holes to see possibly my last sighting of a DB class 60, to be rewarded with seeing 60024 'Clitheroe Castle' in the dying afternoon sun.
Her last working was the 6F06 21.50 Lostock Works-Warrington Arpley on 17th January.
Nice to think that's there's a little bit of me in there as i helped to build her and her sisters all those years ago.

With the climb from the Birmingham Central Goods Station over, Gloucester Barnwoods (85C) BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0 No. 73028 and its rake of vans emerge from the inner city gloom to be meet by the weak Winter sun as it drifts along the freight only line towards the junction with the Birmingham West suburban line at Five Ways station, Birmingham.
The Birmingham to Worcester canal is located behind the brick wall, both share the same corridor in to the city for a considerable distance.

A good old fashion West Country mystery this one - DBS 67016 photographed at Jack's Lane near Frome on the freight-only line to Whatley Quarry on 31st of August 2011. I had also observed 670(17) on the 24th and 25th at Clink Road junction returning Westbury-bound LE as well as 670(20) at Jack's Lane on the 1st of September and again at Oldfield Park LE heading (presumably) for the Avon Valley and Westbury/Mendips on the 2nd.
Three different class members Light Engine around the Mendip area across 10 days-or-so, each working observed between 12.00 and 13.30 (except the Bath one (10.45)) - never a load and no sign of recording equipment or such-like. I can't imagine it was route-learning - wouldn't that be done in the locomotive type intended to work the route(?)
I hadn't discovered RTT or anything similar in 2011 so no help there.
So the question remains - Whatley The Freight-(only) was going on??
