It was still dark outside when Zac woke me up the next morning.
“What time is it?” I asked, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.
“3 AM. If we can make it out of here before the sun comes up then we might have a chance of getting in and out of the nearest town before midday. Come on, Brian and Amy are already up and we have some packing to do.”
I picked myself up off of the floor and walked out back where I found Brian and Amy rummaging through several crates, of which seemed to be the entirety of our supplies.
“We can only take the essentials, so we need enough food for a couple days, our weapons, and other basic tools,” explained Amy. “Here, give me a hand with this crate.”
“Sure.”
I walked over to Amy and grabbed the opposite side of the crate.
“Alright, on three. One, two, three!”
With that we picked up the crate and started heading over to a truck, presumably our means of transportation. As we were walking, I started to realize something: there wasn’t a single zombie around.
“How come there aren’t any other zombies out here? Wouldn’t they be able to see the light and find us here?”
“Oh they would,” Brian chimed in. “Not that they’d be interested though. We drove one of our cars out into the desert and set off the alarm. They won’t be bothering us for a while.”
“Good thinking,” I grunted as Amy and I lifted the crate into the bed of the truck. “So, how far are we driving?”
“About twenty miles from here there’s a small town with a decent shopping center. With any luck, we’ll be able to get there and grab some supplies without running into too much trouble. Besides, there’re more than just zombies out there.”
“After that, where are we headed?”
“We’ll have to see once we get there. As for now, let’s just say it’ll be a long road ahead,” Zac said as he loaded the last bullets into his magazine. “Let’s go.”

Hopefully this will be one of many Outbreak scenes to be done this summer, eventually wrapping up the story and freeing us. We have the next 2-3 scenes planned, with stories partially written, so you'll be seeing more soon :)
Also, the truck is inspired by Forest's excellent model, and will become an important part of the story.
IT'S FINALLY SUMMER :D
