This is such an awesome view when you're standing there in real life and seeing everything in 3D, which includes a sense of depth and distance, an experience no photograph is capable of truly capturing.

I've always enjoyed taking these "through the windshield" photos. The trick is to pre-focus, then wait until you're in the right place and shoot!

Meanwhile, back in New York City's Malaise Era, a lone Mercury Capri makes an attempt to navigate its way along the sharp curves of the old decrepit elevated West Side Side Highway while avoiding sink holes and cement debris. New York. March 1973. by WAVZ 13

Built between 1929 and 1951, the elevated highway had narrow lanes which could not accommodate trucks, as well as extremely sharp S turns that made it obsolete almost immediately.

Maintenance was minimal, and the use of corrosive salts to de-ice the highway in winter accelerated its decay.

When chunks of its facade began to fall off due to lack of maintenance and a truck literally fell through it at 14th Street on December 15, 1973, the highway was shut down, and a debate began whether to renovate it or dismantle it.

Attitudes about urban planning had changed since its construction and a decision was made to tear down the decaying structure.

Technically, the new bridge is the "Mario Cuomo Bridge", but I don't know a single person who calls it that. Even a lot of older highway signs still say Tappan Zee Bridge.

This original 110 negative required a LOT of work to make it Flickr-worthy. The overwhelming majority of scratches and creases are gone, the lighting, color balance and contrast have been more or less restored.

For decades before it became a mecca for Manhattan millionaires and their condos, Piermont, New York, was an old Hudson River factory town with the Robert Gair paper plant as its main employer. The Tappan Zee Bridge hovers in the distance. March 1983 by WAVZ 13

Woody Allen's classic movie, "The Purple Rose of Cairo", was filmed here in the same year I took this photo. For some reason, the characters keep mentioning that the location was in New Jersey. I've read that Woody didn't leave Manhattan often, so the rest of the world was "Jersey".
