Huge jugs of what I presume to be Chinese herbal tea

Back on Jonker Walk by day- these huge jugs of what I presume to be Chinese herbal tea on display in one of the shops on the busy street. The daytime vibe of Jonker Walk is barely a fraction of what it is at night! Scores of pictures from Jonker Walk by night (as I had visited here just the previous evening) appeared earlier in this album. To refresh your memory, Jonker Walk is the Chinatown area in Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia. This colourful and full of energy (especially at night) street starts from just across the Malacca River opposite to the Stadthuys museum on Dutch Square. It's busiest on Fri, Sat and Sunday nights from 18:00 till 00:00. More notes about Jonker Walk appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia, Sept. 2023)

Period setting and atmosphere inside Geographer Cafe

While waiting for my order to arrive, I looked around checking out the period setting and atmosphere inside the legendary Geographer Cafe on Jonker Walk in Malacca/ Melaka. I would later (post lunch) ask the cafe manager if I could check out some of the historic artifacts on display inside the restaurant- he very kindly agreed. Fellow diners glued to their phones inside Geographer Cafe on Jonker Walk in Malacca, Malaysia. Although Jonker Walk is at it's best by night, (see previous pictures earlier in this album), the street is quite well subscribed by day as well, thanks to the scores of tour buses from KL that disgorge tourists here on a day trip from KL. It's hot and muggy all the time, so cafes like the Geographer Cafe offer a perfect respite from the heat outside, while you cool off with a cold one and a light lunch. The legendary Geographer Cafe on Jonker Walk

Back on Jonker Walk by day, I decided to pass by the legendary Geographer Cafe on this street. This is a view of Geographer Cafe from across the street. (it wouldn't fit in the frame otherwise!) Geographer Cafe is a period restaurant set in a beautifully preserved pre-war building. The interior decor of the cafe is made up of plenty of greenery (indoor plants in pots), large water mist fans and sunshades in the open verandah to offer respite from the tropical heat and sun, and of course as shelter from the rain. A cafe bar event space concept is followed. I had read about live music inside the Geographer Cafe- only recorded music was playing at the time of my visit, and at any rate, the cafe interior appeared way too cramped for a live performance. Thanks to my dodgy appetite, I had a plate of garden salad in the Geographer Cafe

Thanks to my dodgy appetite at the time, I had a very light lunch of a plate of garden salad in the Geographer Cafe on Jonker Walk, Malacca. The salad was fairly substantial and very good. And along with an ice cold beer that I had, was total respite from the harsh tropical heat and muggy weather outside. More notes about the legendary Geographer Cafe appeared earlier in this album. Historic artifacts inside Geographer Cafe- love that globe!

After lunch, I asked the kind manager if I could look around checking out the period setting and atmosphere inside the legendary Geographer Cafe on Jonker Walk in Malacca/ Melaka. He very kindly agreet. Look at the old vinyl records, teaware, tins of tea and that old wooden bench inside the cafe. And I simply loved that globe! I'm not sure if any of those old prints on display were for sale- I didn't ask. More notes about the legendary Geographer Cafe appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). Inside the legendary Geographer Cafe on Jonker Walk in Malacca/ Melaka. Conveniently located in a pleasant corner pre- war shophouse right in the heart of Jonker Walk, the Geographer Cafe combines warm ambience with gracious old word charm. I stopped here for a light lunch and found it to be quite popular, with clientele being an eclectic mix of east meets west. Here one of the waitresses is picking up a drinks order for one of the diners. More notes about the legendary Geographer Cafe appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). Back on Jonker Walk by day, I am about to have lunch in the legendary Geographer Cafe on the street. But before that, here is a selfie in front of the cafe- this is from across the street, as the building wouldn't fit in the frame otherwise. Geographér Café is conveniently located in a conspicuous corner pre-war shop house right in the heart of most happening street in Melaka, the Jonker Walk. Geographér Café promotes healthy food and is reputed to serve white meat dishes (chicken and seafood), and no red meat. A variety of drinks are served though, both alcoholic and non- alcoholic, in addition to coffee and tea. Back to Jonker Walk, this is the Chinatown area in Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia. Jonker Walk by night: pic. 34 of 34: Time to leave Jonker Walk- I could have stayed on for longer, but I've seen enough of it and have shot nearly fifty pictures here already. I'd had my dinner here and my stomach was acting up and I was having problems with my appetite, so it's time to leave anyway. Jonker Walk its quite different from KL's Jalan Alor as unlike JA, Jonker Walk offers general merchandise and gift items aside from being a street food market. Most people come to Jonker Walk for the food anyway. Jonker Walk is the Chinatown area in Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia. Jonker Walk by night: pic. 33 of 34: Too bad I was full- but all the same, I'm not sure if I'd have dared to try stinky tofu!.My stomach was acting up anyway and I was having issues with my appetite as well. Stinky tofu is a Chinese form of fermented tofu which has an obxoxiously strong odour. It is usually sold at night markets or roadside stands as a snack, or in lunch bars as a side dish, rather than in restaurants. Traditionally the dish is fermented in a brine with vegetables and meat, sometimes for months. Stinky tofu, together with its unpleasant characteristics, is proven to contain components that are considered to be of spoilage rather than of proper fermentation. Depending on the method of production, most stinky tofu can be linked to food poisoning outbreaks, especially if prepared traditionally and cooked at home. Many people in SE Asia, especially the Chinese, seem to love stinky tofu. Back to Jonker Walk, this is the Chinatown area in Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia. Jonker Walk by night: pic. 25 of 34: A stall selling Nyonya style (blend of Chinese and Malay styles of cooking) rice dumpling on Jonker Walk. Quite unlike the other food stalls on the street, this one did not seem to generate much interest. Rice dumplings are very popular all over Asia, with abundant supplies of rice in all the countries in the region, which are mostly rice growing.. Jonker Walk by night: pic. 31 of 34: Yet another stall on Jonker Walk selling Gula Melaka- palm sugar- an icon of Malacca/ Malaka. Gula Melaka is a type of palm sugar made from the sap of flower buds from the coconut palm, or less commonly, other palms. It can be dense and sticky. It is known in English as Malacca sugar, probably because it originated in the state of Malacca, Malaysia. The closest Indian equivalent to this is jaggery.
