Berlin, Germany.
Built 1915-1917.
In 1917, this newly built industrial complex became the highest secular building in Germany, surpassing the town hall of Augsburg which had held this title since the 17th century. The building, designed by Peter Behrens was built near the site of AEG's Kabelwerk Oberspree and housed the main factory of the Nationale Automobil-Gesellschaft, the automotive division of the same electrical company.
When vehicle production at Oberschöneweide ended in the 1930s, the site was repurposed as the Röhrenfabrik Oberspree and produced vacuum tubes. Vacuum tubes continued to be produced at the Behrensbau after the war, first by the East German Werk für Fernsehelektronik and from 1993 to 2005 by Samsung.
