We drove off from the airport hotel (after taking an age to defrost the car) and not long into the drive we passed a field with a small herd of reindeer.
This was a challenging photo to take. It was Polar NIght so the light was low which meant a higher ISO, and even with a 100mm lens, it was tough to get a close-up shot of the reindeer. They didn't look like they wanted to hang around if we moved any closer.
So with a bit of cropping and trying to deal with the noise, this was my best shot of them.
This was taken on Christmas Day on Langøya, an island in the north of Norway. The forecast was for clear sky but driving around a fair bit kept us under cloud, until returning almost home, a clear patchover a field had a beautiful sky and we arrived just as the aurora activity was starting to pick up.
It was difficult to take - no obvious foreground, hardly any light around (the tree silhouettes weren't visible) and focusing was a pain. And it was shot at 12,800 ISO, so dealing with the noise was a bit of a challenge.
This trip was my first time shooting the Northern Lights with the E-M1 mkii and this was a challenging photo to take. This image is shot at 12,800 ISO, and if you know MFT cameras then you'll know that the sensors are not meant to be pushed anywhere near that far if image quality is the intention. What's more, this was in total darkness - there was no moon in the sky to light up the foreground, and the mountain silhouettes at the bottom of the image weren't visible at all. Even getting a manual focus point was a challenge, and then there was the cold to deal with.
This is six seconds at f4.0 and the RAW file shows a lot(!) of noise. I've dealt with the noise as much as I can, which unfortunately means losing a bit of sharpness in the aurora.
